Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) has identified more than 550 acres of land near the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram district for the development of industrial infrastructure linked to the port. The parcels, located primarily in Kulathoor and Perumkadavila in Neyyattinkara taluk and in Kattakada taluk, are being surveyed and negotiations with landowners are underway ahead of formal acquisition under a land purchase model supported by around INR 1,000 crore allocated in the state budget. Kinfra's land identification is part of a broader push to establish port-led industrial clusters, logistics parks and manufacturing units within a 20 km radius of the seaport, aimed at strengthening the hinterland ecosystem and attracting investment. The state government has also appointed consultants to prepare a comprehensive roadmap for industrialisation around the port.
The Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) has identified more than 550 acres of land in Thiruvananthapuram district to support port-linked industrial development around the Vizhinjam International Seaport, officials said earlier this week. The land parcels are being eyed as potential sites for logistics facilities, industrial clusters and allied infrastructure that would benefit from direct access to the deepwater container port.
Of the total identified area, 400 acres lie in Kulathoor panchayat and 106 acres in Perumkadavila within the Neyyattinkara taluk, while an additional 50 acres have been earmarked in Kattakada taluk. Kinfra plans to acquire the land using a purchase model, under which landowners will be compensated, supported by a budgetary provision of approximately INR 1,000 crore for the current fiscal year. Detailed surveys of the parcels and discussions with stakeholders are underway as a precursor to formal acquisition processes.
The initiative is part of a broader port-led industrialisation strategy aimed at leveraging the growing momentum of the Vizhinjam port, which has seen an increase in vessel calls and cargo handling since operations began. Authorities hope that establishing industrial parks, container freight stations, processing units and warehousing facilities within a 20 km radius of the seaport will attract private investment and catalyse economic activity in the region.
In parallel, the state government has appointed consultants to develop a comprehensive strategic roadmap for port-linked industrialisation, including feasibility studies, cluster development frameworks and detailed project reports to draw investors. In addition to the land identified by Kinfra, Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL), the state entity implementing the seaport project, has previously submitted proposals identifying over 700 acres for further expansion of the industrial ecosystem.
The broader backdrop to this land identification is the rapid progression of Vizhinjam International Seaport, which is being developed as a major transhipment and logistics hub with global trade potential. Strengthening the port's hinterland through targeted industrial and logistics infrastructure is expected to enhance connectivity and competitiveness for both domestic and international cargo movements.
