Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has entered a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, to undertake collaborative research and pilot projects aimed at enhancing sustainable urban mobility and public transport systems. The partnership will combine Kochi Metro's operational experience in multimodal transport including Metro, Water Metro and canal-based services with IISc's advanced, data-driven research capabilities. Focus areas will include sustainable mobility planning, transport operations and the application of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, internet of things, blockchain, simulation modelling and intelligent decision-support systems to solve real-world urban challenges. Officials highlighted that the research will promote evidence-based transport solutions to improve public health, accessibility, congestion management, emissions reduction and climate resilience, with Kochi envisaged as a testbed for developing scalable urban mobility models.
Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on research and implementation initiatives focused on sustainable urban mobility and public transport systems. The agreement aims to leverage the complementary strengths of Kochi Metro's practical experience in designing and operating multimodal urban transport networks with IISc's expertise in data-driven research and advanced technological methods.
Under the MoU, both organisations will work together on sustainable mobility planning, transport operations research, and the integration of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), blockchain, simulation modelling and intelligent decision-support systems. These tools are expected to support evidence-based solutions addressing issues such as service accessibility, congestion, emissions and overall transport efficiency.
Officials said the collaboration reflects a growing emphasis on using empirical data and scientific research to inform urban transport policy and operational strategies. By drawing on real-world data from Kochi's diverse transport ecosystem which includes Metro rail, Water Metro services and canal-based transport options IISc researchers will assess the impacts of various interventions and test new approaches using advanced simulation models.
KMRL managing director Loknath Behera highlighted that the partnership is expected to support Kochi's transformation into a more livable, sustainable and resilient city by promoting integrated transport planning. He noted that the collaboration will help design solutions that encourage greater use of public transport, walking and cycling, while reducing dependence on private vehicles, easing congestion and supporting environmental objectives.
Professor Ashish Verma of IISc, who specialises in transportation planning and policy, emphasised that mobility is deeply connected to public health, air quality and climate resilience. He stated that advanced research tools and simulation capabilities will allow policymakers to assess the impact of transport strategies before implementation, helping to optimise systems for efficiency and sustainability.
The MoU also envisages capacity building, the development of unique datasets, and research projects involving students and academics. Authorities said that outcomes from the collaboration could inform long-term transport planning in Kochi and potentially be adapted for other urban regions seeking sustainable mobility solutions.
