Synopsis

Apogee Aerospace has placed an order worth INR 3,500 crore for 15 Albatross 2.0 amphibian aircraft from Australia's Amphibian Aerospace Industries. The deal includes a planned INR 500 crore investment by Apogee to set up manufacturing, maintenance, training and systems integration facilities in India. The aircraft can operate from land and water and seat up to 28 passengers. Apogee has also been named AAI's exclusive partner for defence and government programmes across the Indian subcontinent, with deliveries expected within 18 to 24 months.

Apogee Aerospace has entered into a strategic aircraft procurement agreement with Australia-based Amphibian Aerospace Industries (AAI) to purchase 15 amphibian aircraft at an estimated value of INR 3,500 crore. The order marks one of the largest commitments in the amphibious aviation segment linked to India and reflects growing interest in multi-role aircraft that can operate on both land and water.

The aircraft being procured is the Albatross 2.0, a next-generation amphibious plane designed to carry up to 28 passengers. The platform is capable of operating from conventional runways as well as water bodies, making it suitable for regional connectivity, island transport, coastal surveillance, emergency response, and specialised government operations. Such aircraft have been gaining attention globally due to their flexibility and lower infrastructure dependence.

In addition to the aircraft order, Apogee Aerospace has committed to investing around INR 500 crore to establish aviation-related facilities in India. These include tail-section manufacturing units, maintenance, repair and overhaul operations, advanced systems integration, and training and simulation infrastructure. These facilities are expected to support both civil and defence requirements and help build domestic capabilities in niche aircraft manufacturing and lifecycle support.

Under the partnership, Apogee Aerospace has been appointed as the exclusive authorised representative for AAI for defence and government programmes across the Indian subcontinent. The scope of the collaboration also includes maintenance, repair and overhaul support, pilot and crew training, and simulation services. Discussions have also been underway to localise parts of the Albatross manufacturing and assembly process in India over time.

AAI has indicated that the first aircraft from this order is expected to be operational in India within the next 18 to 24 months. The company already operates manufacturing facilities outside Australia, including in the United States, and has been exploring expansion opportunities aligned with India's aerospace and defence manufacturing push.

Apogee Aerospace's engagement with AAI is not new. The Indian company had earlier invested around INR 65 crore in Amphibian Aircraft Holdings, the parent entity of AAI. This earlier investment laid the foundation for deeper collaboration and aligns with broader government initiatives focused on regional air connectivity, seaplane operations, and strengthening domestic aerospace manufacturing.

Policy support for amphibious aviation has also been visible in recent government announcements, including proposals to encourage seaplane manufacturing and operations through targeted incentives and viability gap funding, aimed at improving access to remote and coastal regions.
