The Maharashtra government has decided to move ahead with the comprehensive development of Baramati airport to address safety gaps and infrastructure limitations. The plan includes strengthening the runway, installing modern navigation systems and improving air traffic monitoring, following concerns raised after a recent aircraft accident near the airstrip. The Maharashtra Airport Development Company Limited will lead the upgrade process. Baramati airport currently operates with limited facilities and no full-time air traffic control, relying mainly on visual conditions. The redevelopment aims to improve safety and support regional connectivity, with the state also reviewing whether existing plans need revision to meet current aviation standards.
The Maharashtra government has decided to move ahead with the comprehensive development of Baramati airport, aiming to address safety limitations and infrastructure shortfalls at the airstrip. The announcement comes after a recent aircraft accident near the facility, which raised concerns about the preparedness of smaller airports handling private and training flights.
The state has indicated that the development will include strengthening of the runway, installation of modern navigation systems and improvements in air traffic monitoring. These steps are expected to enhance operational safety and bring the airport closer to standard aviation requirements. The Maharashtra Airport Development Company Limited has been assigned the responsibility of planning and executing the upgrades.
Baramati airport currently functions with limited infrastructure and without full-time air traffic control. Flight operations largely depend on visual conditions, with basic coordination support provided by instructors from flying schools operating in the area. Aviation experts have pointed out that such arrangements are increasingly inadequate, especially as the number of non-scheduled and training flights has grown in recent years.
In the past, the airport was transferred from the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation to the state's airport development agency to improve its role in regional connectivity. Earlier proposals had also spoken about improving facilities such as night-landing capabilities and overall safety infrastructure, though progress remained limited.
Industry specialists have stressed that infrastructure upgrades must be accompanied by stricter regulatory oversight. They have called for regular audits of uncontrolled airstrips and flight training organisations, noting that improved physical assets alone will not address safety risks. The state is now examining whether existing plans can be updated or if a fresh detailed project report is required to guide the redevelopment.
