Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited has secured a defence export order from the Government of the Sultanate of Oman to build a naval training ship for the Royal Navy of Oman. The 104-metre-long vessel will be delivered within 18 months and is designed to support advanced naval training at sea. It will accommodate up to 70 officer cadets and feature classrooms, training offices, an auditorium and modern navigation and communication systems. The ship will also be capable of helicopter operations. The order highlights India's growing capabilities in defence shipbuilding and exports, while strengthening maritime cooperation between India and Oman and reinforcing India's position in the global naval manufacturing landscape.
Swan Defence and Heavy Industries Limited (SDHI) has received a defence export order from the Government of the Sultanate of Oman to construct a naval training ship for the Royal Navy of Oman, signalling a significant milestone for India's shipbuilding and defence export capabilities. According to SDHI, the training ship will measure 104.25 metres in length, with a beam of 13.88 metres and a displacement of up to 3,500 tonnes. The vessel has been designed to support advanced naval training and maritime operations for the Royal Navy of Oman, which will use it to enhance the skill development and operational readiness of its officer cadre.
The ship will feature dedicated classroom spaces, training offices and accommodation facilities, and is capable of hosting up to 70 officer cadets at sea. It will also include an onboard auditorium to support a comprehensive learning environment during training missions. In addition, the vessel will be equipped with modern navigation and communication systems and will have the capability to conduct helicopter operations, reflecting its multi-role utility in maritime training contexts.
Rear Admiral V.K. Saxena (retd), chief executive officer of SDHI, said the contract was a testament to the company's advanced technical expertise and world-class shipbuilding capabilities that meet global standards. He added that earning the confidence of the Royal Navy of Oman reinforced SDHI's commitment to consistently delivering high-quality vessels characterised by innovation, reliability and performance.
The export order represents a notable achievement for India's defence manufacturing sector, underscoring the increasing competitiveness of Indian shipyards in international markets. Industry observers noted that the contract aligns with wider efforts to boost indigenous defence production and enhance the country's position as a global supplier of complex maritime platforms. In addition, the deal is expected to strengthen longstanding bilateral maritime ties between India and Oman, as well as support broader cooperation in defence and naval training.
With the delivery of the training vessel expected within the next 18 months, SDHI is advancing its global footprint while contributing to the export momentum of India's shipbuilding industry, which has been supported by strategic policy initiatives and investments aimed at enhancing export competitiveness and technological capabilities.
