Work is progressing on a major rail infrastructure upgrade along Mumbai's Western Railway corridor with the replacement of the Vaitarna River railway bridge under the Virar& Dahanu Road quadrupling project. Led by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation, the project will expand the existing two-track section into a four-track corridor, allowing suburban and long-distance trains to run on separate lines. Two new bridges are being built to replace the ageing structure, improving capacity and reliability. One bridge is nearing completion, while the second is scheduled for commissioning by March 2027. The project is expected to ease congestion, improve punctuality and strengthen rail connectivity in the northern Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Work is advancing on a major rail infrastructure upgrade along the Western Railway corridor north of Mumbai with the replacement of the existing Vaitarna River railway bridge, a long-standing bottleneck on the route. Under the Virar-Dahanu Road quadrupling project, the ageing bridge is being replaced by two new, more robust structures designed to support modern rail demands and improve overall capacity and service reliability.


The quadrupling initiative, executed by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), aims to expand the existing two-track rail line between Virar and Dahanu into a four-track corridor. This will allow suburban commuter services and long-distance trains to operate on dedicated lines, reducing congestion and improving punctuality across services. New bridges at the Vaitarna River are central to this effort, enabling the widened corridor to cross the river without constraints imposed by the older, narrower structure.

The first new structure, designated Bridge 92 and measuring 628 metres in length, is nearing completion and is scheduled to be opened within weeks. The second structure, Bridge 93 at 515 metres, remains under construction and is expected to be operational by March 2027. Once both bridges are commissioned, they will support four broad-gauge tracks engineered for higher axle loads, facilitating smoother segregation of services and accommodating higher traffic volumes.

The broader Virar-Dahanu quadrupling project, backed by significant civil works including earthwork, station upgrades and numerous bridge constructions, is transforming rail travel in the far northern reaches of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Work on the corridor has progressed steadily, with nearly half of the physical construction completed, and major statutory clearances and land acquisitions already secured. The initiative is expected to enhance commuter experience by reducing congestion and enabling more reliable train services on one of India's busiest suburban rail corridors.

By improving infrastructure at key crossing points like the Vaitarna River, the project will strengthen the Western Railway's capacity to meet growing demand while supporting long-term rail network expansion and service quality improvements.
