Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has intensified air quality monitoring across approximately 140 construction sites as part of broader preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, city officials said. In line with the corporation's Good Construction Practices Policy, large sites with a built-up area exceeding 20,000 sq m are being equipped with dust sensors, air quality display boards and CCTV cameras, and monitored regularly to curb pollution from construction activity. The move forms part of a data-driven strategy to reduce particulate emissions and improve ambient air quality, especially at identified pollution hotspots. Under the Good Construction Practices Policy implemented by the civic body, construction sites with a built-up area of more than 20,000 sq m are required to install dust sensors, air quality display boards and CCTV systems to track and display pollution data in real time. As of early February, dust sensors have been installed at approximately 140 such sites, which are monitored regularly for compliance with emission control norms.
AMC officials said that regular monitoring and enforcement are intended to reduce particulate pollution from construction activities, which can contribute significantly to airborne dust levels in urban areas. Penalties have been imposed on sites that violated prescribed norms, with fines totalling around INR 1.71 crore collected during the year ending March 2025 and a further INR 1.16 crore recovered in the current financial year.
The enhanced monitoring of construction sites is part of a coordinated air quality management plan that also addresses other major pollution sources. The civic body has identified nine pollution hotspots across the city, including areas such as Pirana, Rakhial, Raikhad, Bopal, Vatva and Maninagar, where targeted actions are being undertaken. At these locations and others, AMC has deployed truck-mounted mist machines and mechanical sweeping vehicles to help mitigate particulate matter levels.
Funding for many of these interventions has come from grants under the National Clean Air Programme and the 15th Finance Commission, which have supported the deployment of 16 mist machines and 62 mechanical road sweepers to manage dust and particulate pollution on busy routes and at construction sites.
Authorities said that the approach combines technological tools with enforcement and on-ground action to address construction-related pollution in a systematic manner. The requirement for comprehensive dust mitigation measures, including covering exposed soil, use of green nets, and installation of tyre washers at site access points, reflects a shift towards environmentally responsible construction practices.
As Ahmedabad prepares to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, improving air quality has emerged as a key priority alongside infrastructure development. City officials have said that aligning environmental management with international expectations for major events involves sustained effort across sectors, from construction and demolition waste management to transport and urban green planning.
The intensified monitoring of construction sites and associated pollution control measures are seen as integral to achieving cleaner urban air and ensuring that Ahmedabad's growth as a major urban centre is balanced with environmental sustainability ahead of the anticipated global sporting event.
