Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said the Chennai-Bengaluru Expressway will become fully operational by the end of this year, reducing travel time between the two cities to around two hours. The 260 km corridor is currently partially open. He also stated that the Delhi-Dehradun expressway is ready and has reduced travel time to two hours. The government plans to shorten the Delhi-Chennai distance by 320 km and is focusing on eco-friendly roads, hydrogen fuel stations, stricter action against erring contractors, and stronger highway connectivity with neighbouring countries.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that travel time between Chennai and Bengaluru will come down to just two hours once the new expressway is fully commissioned by the end of this year. The 260 km-long Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway is currently partially operational, and the remaining stretches are expected to open in phases before full completion.
Speaking at the 3rd edition of the Build India Infra Awards, the minister stated that the Chennai-Bengaluru corridor would be operational by year-end and would enable commuters to complete the journey within two hours. He also said that the Delhi-Dehradun expressway is ready and has already reduced travel time between the two cities to about two hours.
The minister further said the government is working to reduce the overall distance between Delhi and Chennai by nearly 320 km through new highway alignments and expressway projects. He stressed that alongside faster connectivity, the focus is on developing eco-friendly roads using sustainable materials and modern construction technologies.
Highlighting innovation in transport, he said a pilot initiative for hydrogen fuel filling stations is being undertaken across ten routes. According to him, fuel infrastructure remains a critical requirement, and there are still gaps that need more research, development and collaboration with international companies to make hydrogen mobility viable at scale.
He also warned that strict action will be taken against contractors found involved in fraudulent practices, underlining the government's intent to improve accountability and quality in highway construction.
The minister emphasised the importance of strategic infrastructure, especially road networks connecting India with neighbouring countries, to strengthen trade and regional connectivity. He added that the government is preparing a policy framework under which states will receive support to build roads meeting national highway standards, ensuring uniform quality and improved connectivity across regions.
In recent years, the Centre has accelerated expressway development under the Bharatmala programme, with a focus on reducing logistics costs and improving freight movement. Projects such as the Delhi-Dehradun and Chennai-Bengaluru corridors form part of this broader push to modernise India's highway network.
