Synopsis

Work on the Chilavannoor Bund Road bridge in Kochi has resumed after months of delay, with authorities now targeting completion by May 2026. The arrival of the 90-metre central steel span, the longest for any road bridge in the city, has enabled construction to move forward. The project, awarded to Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society and funded by KIIFB, faced setbacks due to protests, legal hurdles and fabrication delays. Once completed, the bridge is expected to ease congestion on Sahodaran Ayyappan Road and reduce pressure on the Vyttila junction.

Construction of the Chilavannoor Bund Road bridge in Kochi has restarted after a prolonged pause caused by multiple setbacks. Work has now picked up pace following the arrival of the 90-metre central steel span, which is the longest span used for any road bridge in the city so far. The delay in transporting this key structural component had slowed overall progress.

The project was awarded in late 2023 to Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society with a completion timeline of 20 months. However, execution did not proceed as planned. Local residents had raised concerns regarding the design and impact of the bridge, which led to legal proceedings and public discussions. Authorities later held consultations to address objections, after which survey and preliminary works were allowed to continue.

Progress was further affected when heavy rainfall disrupted operations at the steel fabrication yard. This caused delays in manufacturing and transporting the central span. With fabrication now completed and the span delivered to the site, installation activities are underway. Officials are aiming to complete the structure by May 2026 so that it can be opened to traffic before the monsoon season.

At one stage, after partial progress, the stretch was temporarily opened for two-wheeler movement. Following minor accidents and safety concerns raised by residents, authorities decided to fully close the road passing through the construction zone. The closure is expected to remain until major structural works are completed.

The bridge is being developed with financial support from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). Once operational, it will connect the NH Bypass near Thykoodam with Panampilly Nagar, offering an alternative corridor to the heavily congested Sahodaran Ayyappan Road. The project is expected to help reduce traffic pressure at the Vyttila junction, which remains one of Kochi's busiest intersections.

Beyond traffic relief, the bridge forms part of a larger plan to rejuvenate the Chilavannoor Canal. The broader initiative includes canal cleaning, dredging to improve water flow, strengthening embankments and creating basic public access infrastructure along the canal stretch. The aim is to combine mobility improvement with environmental restoration in this urban pocket.

With structural components now in place and construction activity resumed, authorities are focusing on adhering to the revised schedule and avoiding further disruptions.
