The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has carried out a demolition drive against unauthorised construction in the Nerul division, intensifying enforcement under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966. The action was undertaken on 23 February 2026 after the concerned property owner failed to comply with a notice issued under Section 54 of the Act within the stipulated period. The structure, located in Sector 6, Sarsole village, Nerul, was found to be under illegal construction despite prior intimation from the civic authorities. The demolition was executed by the encroachment department with mechanical support and police protection, under the supervision of senior municipal officials. The civic body has stated that similar anti-encroachment actions will continue across its jurisdiction to curb unauthorised development.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has removed an unauthorised structure in the Nerul division as part of its ongoing enforcement action against illegal construction within the city's municipal limits. The demolition drive was carried out on 23 February 2026 under the directions of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde and with guidance from Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr Kailas Gaikwad.
According to the civic body, the action pertained to unauthorised construction being undertaken by a private individual at Unit No. 0002, Plot No. 0152, Sector 6, Sarsole village, Nerul, Navi Mumbai. The Nerul ward office had earlier issued a statutory notice under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966, directing the owner to remove the illegal construction within the prescribed timeframe.
However, despite the expiry of the notice period, the unauthorised structure was not removed voluntarily. In view of the non-compliance, the Nerul ward office organised a demolition operation and proceeded with the removal of the structure on the scheduled date.
The civic action was carried out under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner and Ward Officer Dr Anuradha Babar. The encroachment department deployed staff members, seven labourers and one JCB machine to execute the demolition. Police personnel from the municipal encroachment wing were present at the site along with security staff to ensure law and order during the operation.
Officials stated that the drive forms part of NMMC's broader effort to regulate development activity and prevent unauthorised construction, which poses risks to planned urban growth, infrastructure provisioning and public safety. The civic body reiterated that constructions carried out without mandatory approvals or in violation of sanctioned plans would attract strict action under applicable planning laws.
The municipal corporation has indicated that similar anti-encroachment operations will be intensified in the coming period across various nodes of Navi Mumbai. Residents and property owners have been advised to obtain all necessary permissions from the planning authority before commencing any construction activity, failing which enforcement action will be initiated in accordance with statutory provisions.
The latest demolition in Nerul underscores the civic administration's stated intent to strengthen compliance with development control regulations and curb the proliferation of unauthorised structures within its jurisdiction.
