Synopsis

Akasa Air has become the first airline to begin commercial operations from the new integrated terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. The inaugural flight operated between Mumbai and Guwahati, marking the formal start of passenger services from the expanded facility. The terminal, inaugurated by Narendra Modi in December last year, raises the airport's annual passenger handling capacity to around 13.1 million. The development is expected to strengthen air connectivity in Assam and support growing travel demand across the Northeast.

Akasa Air this week commenced operations from the new integrated terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, becoming the first airline to run scheduled services from the facility. The inaugural flight departed from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in the afternoon and landed in Guwahati later the same day. The return flight to Mumbai was completed at night.

A formal lamp-lighting ceremony was organised at the airport to mark the beginning of commercial operations. Senior executives from Akasa Air, officials from the Assam government, including the Chief Minister, and representatives of the airport operator were present. A commemorative boarding pass was also handed over to the first passenger travelling on the flight.

The new terminal was inaugurated in December last year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With the commissioning of this facility, the airport's annual passenger handling capacity has increased to approximately 13.1 million. The expanded infrastructure is designed to handle higher traffic volumes and improve passenger movement, baggage handling and overall operational efficiency.

The Guwahati airport is operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, which manages several major airports across India. The new terminal forms part of broader efforts to upgrade airport infrastructure in tier-II cities and improve connectivity to the Northeast, a region that has seen steady growth in domestic air traffic in recent years.

Akasa Air has been expanding its network steadily since commencing operations in 2022. The airline has been focusing on strengthening connectivity between metro cities and emerging regional destinations. Its entry into the new Guwahati terminal at the start of commercial operations places it at the forefront of services from the upgraded facility.

The operationalisation of the terminal is expected to support additional flights and new routes in the coming months as more airlines shift services to the integrated building. Airport officials have indicated that the modern terminal has been designed to cater to rising passenger demand over the next several years.
