Synopsis

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has completed a complex tunnelling stretch beneath an active railway line, a busy flyover and an operational metro corridor as part of the Janakpuri West& RK Ashram Metro corridor under Phase IV. The 203-metre section near Sadar Bazar was executed 15 metres below ground without stopping railway, metro or road traffic. The work took 117 days due to technical complexity and multiple approvals. The stretch forms part of the 11.4 km underground package that includes six new stations in central Delhi.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation recently completed a technically demanding tunnelling operation beneath a fully functional railway line, a major flyover and an elevated metro corridor in central Delhi. The work was carried out near Sadar Bazar railway station as part of the Janakpuri West-RK Ashram corridor under Phase IV expansion of the Delhi Metro network.

The tunnel boring machine operated about 15 metres below ground level and crossed under active railway tracks used by long-distance trains, including the Chennai-Jammu Andaman Express and Paschim Express. Railway services continued normally during the entire operation. At the same time, traffic on the Rani Jhansi flyover and metro services on the Red Line were also maintained without interruption.

Officials stated that this was the first time DMRC had undertaken tunnelling beneath live railway infrastructure along with an elevated metro corridor and a flyover at the same location. The critical 203-metre stretch took 117 days to complete. Although the distance was short, progress was slow due to the need for multiple safety clearances and strict monitoring requirements because of the sensitive surroundings.

The work forms part of the DC-05 package of the corridor, which includes 11.4 km of underground tunnelling and six stations at Derawal Nagar, Ghanta Ghar, Pulbangash, Sadar Bazar, Nabi Karim and RK Ashram. The alignment passes through one of the most densely populated parts of Delhi, with nearly 3,500 buildings located within the zone of influence.

Engineers dealt with mixed ground conditions along the route. Around half of the stretch consisted of hard rock, while the remaining portion had soft soil with a high water table close to ground level. Continuous ground monitoring instruments were installed to track settlement and vibration levels. Protective measures such as controlled excavation, grouting and structural support systems were used to safeguard nearby buildings and existing infrastructure.

DMRC has previously executed challenging underground works in congested areas, including sections beneath heritage zones and busy markets during earlier metro phases. However, the present crossing under live railway tracks along with other structures required close coordination with Indian Railways and other agencies to ensure zero disruption.

The Janakpuri West-RK Ashram corridor is an important link under Phase IV and is expected to improve connectivity between West and Central Delhi once completed. The underground section will ease pressure on road networks in crowded commercial areas and provide faster public transport options.
