The new suburban railway station at Kilambakkam and the 275-metre elevated skywalk connecting it to the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT) are expected to open in March. Authorities have completed most structural work and are now addressing minor corrections on a segment crossing GST Road. The final link to the railway's island platform is being coordinated with Indian Railways and CUMTA. Once operational, the integrated facility will provide seamless bus-rail connectivity, resolving access challenges faced by commuters since the bus terminus became functional.
The upcoming Kilambakkam suburban railway station and the 275-metre elevated skywalk linking it to the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus (KCBT) are likely to become operational in March. The project is in its final stage, with finishing work and structural corrections currently underway.
Officials overseeing the work have identified a minor deflection in one portion of the skywalk that crosses the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road. The issue occurred because a section of the structure was built in place rather than launched as a single continuous unit. Reinforcement measures are now being completed to ensure structural stability and long-term safety. After these corrections, roofing and flooring works will be finalised to make the walkway fully functional and weather-protected.
The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), which is executing the skywalk component, has fixed internal deadlines to complete the remaining works before opening. Authorities have indicated that the final arm of the structure will be installed in early March, enabling a direct elevated connection between the railway station and the bus terminus.
In addition to the skywalk completion, efforts are underway to extend connectivity to the railway station's island platform. This requires close coordination with Indian Railways and the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA). Construction in this stretch involves temporarily suspending high-voltage power supply and briefly blocking three railway tracks to allow safe installation work.
The Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus began operations in late 2023, following the relocation of long-distance bus services from Koyambedu. However, the absence of a direct railway link created inconvenience for passengers travelling from southern districts and suburban areas. Commuters had to depend on intermediate transport or cross busy roads, raising safety and accessibility concerns.
The integrated station and skywalk project aims to address these gaps by enabling seamless transfer between suburban train services and mofussil bus operations. Once opened, passengers will be able to move between platforms and bus bays without stepping onto the main road.
The railway station itself is expected to serve growing residential clusters in and around Kilambakkam, Vandalur, and adjacent southern corridors. With bus and rail services operating from a single connected hub, authorities expect improved passenger movement and reduced congestion in the surrounding area.
