State-run NHPC Ltd has approved investments totalling about INR 5,700 crore for two hydroelectric projects in Jammu & Kashmir. The approvals cover the 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II project and the 260 MW Dulhasti Stage-II project, including interest during construction and enabling infrastructure costs. Construction is targeted to begin by March next year, subject to signing of agreements and statutory clearances. Together, the projects will add 500 MW of renewable capacity and strengthen hydropower generation in the Union Territory.
The board of state-owned NHPC Ltd has approved investment proposals worth about INR 5,702.91 crore for two hydroelectric projects in Jammu & Kashmir. The decision was taken in a recent board meeting as part of the company's expansion of hydropower capacity in the region.
The first approval relates to the 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II Hydroelectric Project. The total estimated completion cost stands at around INR 2,708.95 crore. This amount includes INR 264.31 crore towards interest during construction and INR 26.20 crore for enabling infrastructure. The project will be developed in continuation of the existing Uri-I power station to utilise the remaining hydro potential in the area.
The second approval is for the 260 MW Dulhasti Stage-II Hydroelectric Project, with an estimated cost of about INR 2,993.96 crore. This includes INR 289.06 crore as interest during construction and INR 245 crore towards enabling infrastructure and associated works. The project is planned as an extension of the existing Dulhasti power station in the Chenab basin.
NHPC has indicated that construction of both projects is targeted to commence by March next year. The start of work will depend on signing implementation agreements with the Government of Jammu & Kashmir or the joint venture partner JKSPDC, along with obtaining statutory and regulatory clearances.
Once completed, the two projects will add a combined capacity of 500 MW. This addition is expected to support regional power supply, improve grid stability, and contribute to India's renewable energy targets. Jammu & Kashmir holds significant untapped hydropower potential, and NHPC has been steadily increasing its presence in the Union Territory through staged capacity additions.
NHPC is one of India's largest hydropower developers and already operates multiple projects across northern and northeastern states. The latest approvals reflect a continued focus on expanding clean energy generation through hydro-based assets.
