Maharashtra has introduced a revised compensation package for farmers affected by the New Nagpur Business District project, offering developed commercial plots along with monetary compensation. This replaces the earlier cash-only approach and aims to provide long-term benefits to landowners while supporting city expansion. The government is also compiling lists for a potential farm loan waiver targeting genuinely distressed farmers. Alongside this, authorities are investigating irregularities at the Nagpur District Central Cooperative Bank and enforcing strict measures against unauthorised layouts under the Nagpur Regional Plan.
Maharashtra's revenue minister announced a historic compensation package for landowners affected by the New Nagpur Business District project. Under the revised plan, farmers in commercial zones will receive developed commercial plots in addition to monetary compensation. The minister said this move marks a departure from the earlier policy of cash-only payments and is designed to give farmers long-term economic benefits while strengthening support for the city's growth.
The state has also started compiling lists of eligible beneficiaries for a potential farm loan waiver, focusing on farmers genuinely in distress. The minister emphasized that the government is committed to preventing exploitation under cooperative laws and ensuring that relief reaches those who need it.
In parallel, the government has launched a three-month Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Revenue Campaign to deliver 15 key revenue services directly to citizens efficiently and transparently. Officials highlighted the importance of timely service delivery as part of broader administrative reforms.
Authorities are investigating irregularities worth around INR1,200 crore at the Nagpur District Central Cooperative Bank and have promised strict action against anyone found responsible. At the same time, the government has taken a stringent stance on unauthorised layouts under the Nagpur Regional Plan. Plots purchased before October 15, 2024, may be regularised under existing laws, while layouts developed after that date will not receive amnesty, and criminal cases will be filed against violators.
The New Nagpur Business District spans 692 hectares across Mouza Godhni and Mouza Ladgaon in Hingna taluka. The project, estimated at INR11,300 crore, is implemented by the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority with NBCC (India) Limited as consultant. The government had previously earmarked INR3,000 crore for land acquisition and INR3,500 crore for Phase 1 development.
Officials also noted that new measures are being taken in Gadchiroli district to improve tender processes and curb smuggling activities. Overall, the government's approach combines direct financial support, asset-based compensation, and stricter enforcement of land regulations to balance urban development with farmer welfare.
