Construction has started on a four lane railway overbridge at Doraha in Punjab, aiming to resolve a traffic bottleneck that has persisted for nearly 12 years. The INR 70.55 crore project is critical for connecting the Malwa region, Chandigarh, and nearby districts, as the existing level crossing handles about 190 trains and over 3,000 vehicles daily. The bridge is part of a broader initiative covering 166 railway sites across the state, including underbridges, subways, and station redevelopments under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with investments totaling over INR 2,790 crore.
The Doraha railway overbridge (ROB), a four lane structure costing INR 70.55 crore, has begun construction to address a long-standing traffic challenge in Punjab. The existing level crossing on the Rupnagar Ludhiana road handles around 190 trains and more than 3,000 vehicles daily, creating frequent delays that have affected commuters, traders, and transporters for almost 12 years. The bridge is expected to allow uninterrupted movement across the tracks, reducing waiting times and improving the flow of goods and services.
Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu, stated that the project will proceed on a fast-track basis, targeting completion within the next year. Officials highlighted that the bridge will not only ease traffic but also act as an economic enabler, supporting smoother trade and transport operations in the region.
This project forms a part of larger railway infrastructure improvements across Punjab. Currently, work is underway at 166 locations statewide, including railway overbridges, underbridges, and low-height subways, representing a combined investment of INR 1,480 crore. In parallel, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is upgrading 30 railway stations with modern passenger amenities and facilities, backed by INR 1,311 crore. These upgrades are aimed at aligning Punjab's rail infrastructure with modern standards and improving passenger convenience.
Beyond local improvements, broader northern corridor projects are in progress. Construction of third and fourth railway lines between Delhi and Ambala, covering 194 km, is underway as part of the Delhi-Jammu corridor expansion. The work is scheduled for completion within four years and aims to enhance punctuality for passenger services while providing reliable transport to industrial hubs, thermal power plants in Ropar, Panipat, and Rajpura, and various agricultural warehouses.
Locals in Doraha and surrounding areas have welcomed the project, recognizing it as a solution to congestion that has hampered regional connectivity and growth for over a decade. The new overbridge is expected to support regional mobility, trade efficiency, and safer daily commuting for residents and logistics operators.
