Synopsis

Embraer and Mahindra Aerospace have announced plans to set up a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in India for the C-390 Millennium aircraft, subject to its selection by the Indian Air Force under the Medium Transport Aircraft programme. The proposed facility will provide heavy maintenance, structural inspections, component repair, avionics support and training. The move builds on their earlier localisation agreement and aligns with India's Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat goals, while aiming to strengthen domestic aerospace capability and long-term fleet support infrastructure.

Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer and Mahindra Aerospace have announced plans to establish a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in India for the C-390 Millennium. The facility will be set up if the aircraft is selected by the Indian Air Force under its Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme.

The announcement builds on the strategic partnership signed between the two companies in October last year to collaborate on manufacturing and localisation of the C-390 in India. That agreement had outlined a broader industrial roadmap, including potential assembly, component manufacturing and supply chain integration. The newly proposed MRO facility is positioned as a key part of that long-term cooperation.

As per the companies, the planned MRO centre will provide a complete range of services. These include base maintenance, heavy maintenance checks, structural inspections and testing, component repair and overhaul, avionics system support, and technical training for engineers and crew. Company officials stated that establishing these capabilities within India would help ensure faster turnaround time, improved aircraft availability and reduced dependence on overseas maintenance facilities.

The companies indicated that the facility could also support future international operators of the C-390 in the region, subject to commercial arrangements. This would potentially position India as a regional support hub for the aircraft. They added that the initiative would create opportunities for Indian suppliers, particularly in high-precision manufacturing and aerospace services, strengthening the domestic industrial ecosystem.

The C-390 Millennium is a multi-mission transport aircraft designed for cargo and troop transport, medical evacuation, humanitarian missions, search and rescue operations and aerial refuelling. The aircraft has already been selected by multiple countries, and Embraer is offering it to India as a replacement for ageing transport platforms currently in service.

India has been steadily expanding its defence manufacturing base and encouraging global original equipment manufacturers to localise production and support activities. The proposed MRO facility aligns with the Government of India's Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, which aim to increase domestic value addition and reduce import dependence in the defence sector.

The establishment of the facility remains contingent on the outcome of the Indian Air Force's Medium Transport Aircraft procurement process. If selected, the MRO centre would form a critical part of lifecycle support for the fleet and deepen aerospace collaboration between Brazil and India.
