Synopsis

The Tata Group and OpenAI have announced a strategic partnership to develop AI infrastructure in India, starting with 100MW of AI-ready capacity and scalable to 1GW. TCS, through its data centre arm HyperVault, will build green-powered, liquid-cooled facilities designed for high-density AI workloads. Backed by a USD 1 billion investment from TPG, the venture aims to position India as a global AI hub. The collaboration will also drive enterprise AI adoption, with TCS deploying OpenAI solutions across sectors. Thousands of Tata employees will access Enterprise ChatGPT, while AI skilling and industry-focused solutions form a key part of the initiative.

The Tata Group and OpenAI have announced a strategic partnership to build artificial intelligence infrastructure in India, beginning with 100 megawatts (MW) of AI-ready capacity and scalable to 1 gigawatt (GW) over time.

The multi-year collaboration will see Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), through its recently launched data centre business HyperVault, develop green-energy-powered, AI-optimised infrastructure. The facilities will include liquid-cooled data centres with high rack densities and connectivity across major cloud regions to support next-generation AI workloads.

The companies said the initial 100MW capacity is aimed at positioning India as a global AI hub, with expansion to 1GW possible in later phases.

TCS had earlier secured a USD 1 billion investment from private equity firm TPG for its data centre venture. TPG is expected to hold a 27.5 to 49 per cent stake in the business.

Beyond infrastructure, the partnership will focus on enterprise AI adoption. TCS and OpenAI plan to jointly develop industry-specific agentic AI solutions by combining OpenAI's advanced AI platforms with TCS domain expertise and industry knowledge.

Under a joint go-to-market initiative, TCS will deploy, integrate and scale OpenAI's AI technologies for Indian and global enterprises. The company said the collaboration will help accelerate AI-led transformation across sectors.

As part of the agreement, several thousand Tata Group employees will gain access to Enterprise ChatGPT to improve productivity and innovation. TCS will also leverage OpenAI's Codex tools to enhance software engineering outcomes.

The partnership was announced during the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, a day after Infosys unveiled a separate AI collaboration with Anthropic.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the partnership aims to build infrastructure, skills and local ecosystems to expand AI access across India. He noted that India is already a leading market for AI adoption.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran described the agreement as a significant milestone in India's ambition to become a global AI leader. He added that the collaboration would also support AI skilling initiatives for Indian youth, with a focus on expanding opportunities in the technology-driven economy.

The agreement combines infrastructure development, enterprise solutions and workforce training, marking one of the largest AI-focused collaborations in India to date.
