East Central Railway has proposed infrastructure upgrades at Begusarai railway station to manage rising congestion and improve passenger access. The plan includes a second station entry and a new road over bridge near Semapur, close to a busy level crossing. A detailed project report will be prepared before execution. The initiatives aim to reduce crowding at the existing entrance, improve traffic flow around the station area, and address long-standing delays faced by both commuters and local road users.
East Central Railway has initiated steps to address congestion issues at Begusarai railway station, one of the busiest stations in the Sonepur division. Railway officials said that a second entry point is being planned to improve passenger movement and reduce pressure on the existing main entrance, which has been struggling to handle increasing footfall during peak hours.
The proposal is at the planning stage, and a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared to assess feasibility, cost, and land requirements. Officials clarified that construction work will begin only after the DPR is finalised and approvals are obtained. The additional entry is expected to help distribute passenger flow more evenly across the station premises, reducing crowding at ticket counters, entry gates, and circulating areas.
In parallel, the railways are also planning a new road over bridge (ROB) near Semapur, close to level crossing gate number three. This level crossing has been a major congestion point, with frequent closures for train movement causing traffic jams and delays for road users. The proposed ROB is intended to eliminate this bottleneck by allowing uninterrupted road traffic while ensuring smoother rail operations.
Railway authorities indicated that the ROB will significantly reduce waiting time for vehicles and improve safety in the area. The congestion around the level crossing has been a long-standing issue, affecting daily commuters, emergency services, and goods movement in and around Begusarai.
Begusarai station has seen a steady rise in passenger numbers in recent years, driven by regional population growth and increased train services. Similar congestion-relief measures, including additional entries and grade-separated crossings, have been implemented at other high-footfall stations across the railway network. Officials said the Begusarai upgrades are part of broader efforts to improve station access and last-mile connectivity without disrupting existing operations.
