Railway infrastructure projects valued at nearly INR 53,000 crore are currently under execution across Karnataka, supported by a higher allocation in the latest Union Budget. The Centre has earmarked INR 7,748 crore for railway development in the state, with works spanning track expansion, station upgrades, new terminals and improved commuter access. The initiatives aim to ease congestion in key corridors around Bengaluru, enhance regional connectivity, and address long-pending local demands while strengthening the state's rail network to support future growth.
Railway infrastructure development in Karnataka has gathered pace, with projects worth around INR 52,950 crore underway across the state, according to the Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti, V Somanna. The progress follows an enhanced budgetary allocation of INR 7,748 crore for Karnataka in the current fiscal, reflecting a continued focus on strengthening rail connectivity and capacity.
The ongoing works cover a wide range of activities, including track doubling and quadrupling, station redevelopment, new passenger facilities, and safety-related infrastructure. A key focus area remains the Bengaluru rail network, which handles heavy suburban and long-distance traffic. To address this, the railways have added new stoppages for four pairs of express trains at Nayandahalli station, improving access for daily commuters, students and office-goers travelling between Bengaluru and cities such as Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Bagalkot and Pandharpur.
Capacity enhancement is also being pursued through the quadrupling of the Bengaluru Cantonment Whitefield section, one of the busiest rail stretches in the state. This project is expected to ease congestion, improve punctuality and support the growing suburban rail demand in eastern Bengaluru. In parallel, work is progressing on proposals for a Mega Coaching Terminal at Yelahanka, planned to handle increased train operations and reduce pressure on existing terminals in the city.
On the infrastructure side, a rebuilt road overbridge between Vijayanagar and Padarayanapura has been opened to traffic, improving road-rail coordination and easing movement along the Mysuru-Bengaluru corridor. The project also addresses safety concerns at a critical crossing point.
These projects add to earlier railway investments in Karnataka, where track doubling and electrification have been steadily taken up over the past few years to improve operational efficiency. The current set of works reinforces the broader effort by Indian Railways to modernise infrastructure and prepare the network for higher passenger and freight demand in Karnataka, particularly around Bengaluru.
