The planned runway expansion at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport continues to face delays due to pending land acquisition and defence clearances. Around 22 acres are required to meet mandatory runway end safety area norms, with a key portion owned by a defence public sector unit. Despite multiple discussions between state authorities and the Union government, approvals are still awaited. The project is further complicated by the need to realign a nearby road and relocate a fire station, pushing the timeline back.
The proposed runway expansion at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has yet to move forward as critical land acquisition and defence-related approvals remain unresolved. The project is essential to comply with runway end safety area (RESA) requirements prescribed under international aviation safety norms. Airport authorities require approximately 22 acres of land at the southern end of the runway to create the mandatory safety buffer.
A major portion of the required land belongs to BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Ltd, making the process dependent on approval from the Ministry of Defence. State government officials have held several rounds of discussions with central authorities, including consultations at senior administrative levels, but a final decision on the transfer of defence land is still pending.
Officials familiar with the matter said the proposal continues to move between departments for review and clearance. Until formal approvals are granted by the Union government, preparatory work on the runway expansion cannot begin. Even after clearances are received, authorities expect additional time to complete procedural steps before construction can start.
The project is also linked to other local infrastructure adjustments. Sections of the Chackai-Shanghumugham Road fall within the land identified for expansion and would need to be realigned. In addition, the Chackai fire and rescue station located in the area will have to be relocated. These requirements have added further complexity to the land acquisition process and extended timelines.
Earlier, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had granted extensions to meet RESA compliance after the original deadline could not be achieved due to land-related hurdles. The delay has placed continued pressure on airport authorities, particularly as passenger traffic at the airport has steadily increased in recent years.
The runway expansion is also an important part of the airport's broader development roadmap, including terminal upgrades planned under Project Anantha. Progress on these projects is closely tied to the completion of runway safety works, making resolution of land and clearance issues a priority for long-term capacity planning.
