Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat has sought central government support for a large-scale and planned redevelopment of Ramakrishna Beach, citing long-pending infrastructure and safety concerns. In his representation to the Union Tourism and Culture Ministry, he flagged traffic congestion, limited pedestrian access, weak drainage and damage to existing coastal structures. The proposal calls for a unified master plan covering public amenities, mobility, shoreline protection and parking. The Centre has acknowledged the submission and is expected to examine the proposal further.
A proposal seeking comprehensive redevelopment of Ramakrishna Beach in Visakhapatnam has been placed before the central government by the city's Member of Parliament, M. Sribharat. The MP met the Union Minister for Tourism and Culture and submitted a detailed note outlining the need for a coordinated master plan for the beachfront, instead of isolated upgrades undertaken over the years. The representation highlighted that RK Beach continues to face severe traffic congestion along Beach Road, especially during weekends and public events, with limited space for pedestrians and cyclists. According to the MP, the absence of integrated planning has resulted in poor pedestrian safety, inadequate public amenities and underutilised open spaces, despite the beach being one of the most visited public areas in the city.
Concerns were also raised over stormwater drainage and coastal protection. The MP pointed out that existing retaining walls and drainage systems are insufficient to handle heavy rainfall and high tides, leading to periodic flooding and damage to infrastructure. Parts of the beachfront have previously been affected by erosion and weather-related structural stress, underscoring the need for stronger and better-designed protective measures.
As part of the redevelopment proposal, the MP suggested a continuous seaside promenade with wider walkways, stepped seating areas and viewing decks along the shoreline. Plans also include dedicated cycling tracks, improved lighting, modern public utilities and elevated pedestrian crossings to reduce conflict with vehicular traffic. Multi-level parking facilities have been proposed to ease pressure on surrounding roads and residential areas.
The proposal further stresses that RK Beach redevelopment should align with broader urban and tourism planning for the city, ensuring environmental sensitivity and long-term sustainability. The Union minister reportedly responded positively and assured that the proposal would be examined in detail at the ministry level.
RK Beach has remained central to Visakhapatnam's urban identity and tourism economy for decades, but planners and residents have often flagged the lack of cohesive development. The current proposal aims to address these long-standing gaps through structured central support and coordinated execution.
