Patel Engineering Ltd has completed tunnelling work under Package II of the CIDCO Treated Water Tunnel Project in Maharashtra four months ahead of schedule. The 6.27-km package, part of the overall 28.2-km tunnel project awarded by City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd (CIDCO) for INR 520 crore in June 2023, was executed in 14 months against the contracted 19 months. The company achieved a national benchmark by tunnelling 812.466 metres in January using a 3.2-metre diameter Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The project involved underground tunnelling between Sai and Vindhane villages in Raigad district, marking a significant milestone in infrastructure execution.
Patel Engineering Ltd has completed tunnelling work for Package II of the CIDCO Treated Water Tunnel Project in Maharashtra, finishing the assignment four months ahead of schedule.
The Mumbai-based infrastructure company had secured the 6.27-kilometre Package II in June 2023 from the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd (CIDCO) for INR 520 crore. The package forms part of the larger 28.2-kilometre treated water tunnel project aimed at strengthening water infrastructure in the region.
In a statement, the company announced the completion of the tunnelling work awarded under the package, highlighting a major productivity milestone achieved during execution. Patel Engineering said it set a national benchmark in the tunnelling industry by completing 812.466 metres of tunnelling in January.
The project involved underground tunnelling between village Sai and village Vindhane in Raigad district of Maharashtra. The work was executed using a 3.2-metre diameter Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), enabling efficient and precise excavation.
According to the company, the tunnelling work was completed in 14 months, compared to the contractual timeline of 19 months. The early completion underscores the company's operational efficiency and technical capabilities in handling complex underground infrastructure projects.
Managing Director Kavita Shirvaikar said the TBM breakthrough marked the successful conclusion of an exceptionally demanding tunnelling drive.
The tunnel boring machine breakthrough marks the successful closure of an exceptionally demanding tunnelling drive and validates the record productivity achieved by our teams earlier this year, she said.
Patel Engineering has over seven decades of experience in the infrastructure sector. The company has executed more than 85 dams, 40 hydroelectric projects and over 300 kilometres of tunnelling work for central public sector undertakings and state government organisations in India and overseas.
The completion of the CIDCO tunnel package ahead of schedule is expected to contribute to timely enhancement of treated water supply infrastructure in Maharashtra. Large-scale underground tunnel projects are considered technically challenging due to geological variations, alignment complexities and safety requirements.
By achieving record tunnelling progress and completing the package ahead of deadline, Patel Engineering has reinforced its credentials in the specialised field of underground infrastructure development.
