Synopsis

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) recently conducted a two-day anti-encroachment drive along Old Railway Road to support the redevelopment of Gurgaon Railway Station. Illegal shops, extended sheds, and street vendors had narrowed the approach road, causing congestion and obstructing renovation work. Around 100 shops were partially or fully cleared, and vendors near the Sabzi Mandi were instructed to operate within designated areas. Traffic police issued 115 challans for violations, and GMDA has stated that monitoring will continue to prevent future encroachments and maintain smooth access.

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority carried out a two-day anti-encroachment drive along Old Railway Road to improve access for the ongoing revamp of Gurgaon Railway Station. Illegal structures, extended sheds, and street vendors had significantly narrowed the approach road, making it difficult for vehicles to pass and affecting renovation work. Railway officials had raised concerns about the obstructions, prompting GMDA to take action.

During the operation, GMDA teams dismantled extended structures from around 100 shops and cleared approximately 200 metres of the heavily encroached 500-metre stretch. Vendors operating directly in front of commercial premises were removed, and those near the Sabzi Mandi were instructed to restrict their activities within designated areas to avoid blocking the main road in the future.

RS Batth, District Town Planner at GMDA, emphasized the authority's commitment to maintaining public spaces and supporting the redevelopment of the station into a modern transit hub. Traffic police actively participated in the drive, issuing 115 challans for traffic violations observed during enforcement. Authorities have made it clear that continuous monitoring will follow in the coming weeks to ensure that cleared areas remain free of encroachments.

This initiative is part of GMDA's broader effort to reclaim public roads in congested areas across Gurugram. Similar drives in other parts of the city have helped reduce traffic congestion and improve access to key transport and commercial hubs.
