Ludhiana's central bus stand is approaching completion of a major accessibility upgrade aimed at improving mobility for differently-abled commuters. The project, coordinated by a dedicated task force and non-profit partners, includes tactile pathways, Braille signage, high-gradient ramps, reinforced safety railings, and modern washrooms with emergency alarm systems. Phase I is expected to benefit over 5,000 daily users. The next stage will retrofit buses with accessibility features, creating a seamless transit network. The administration emphasizes that the upgrades meet international accessibility standards and focus on inclusive, functional infrastructure rather than cosmetic changes.
The central bus stand in Ludhiana is nearing the final stages of an extensive upgrade to become a fully accessible transit hub for all commuters, particularly those with disabilities. The district administration has prioritized removing physical barriers that have historically limited mobility at the terminal.
A dedicated task force, led by Tansheen Kaur, is coordinating closely with government departments and the Act Humane Foundation to resolve implementation challenges. The first phase of the project includes installing tactile pathways for visually impaired passengers, Braille signage, reinforced safety railings, high-gradient ramps, and specialized washrooms equipped with modern emergency alarm systems. Once operational, these improvements are expected to serve over 5,000 daily commuters, providing greater safety, independence, and convenience.
The Deputy Commissioner has instructed the executing agencies to follow international accessibility standards and maintain strict timelines. Authorities emphasize that these upgrades are not merely aesthetic but represent a meaningful shift in public infrastructure, ensuring dignity and equal opportunity for differently-abled citizens.
Following the completion of terminal improvements, Phase II will focus on retrofitting public transport buses with accessibility features, creating a seamless, door-to-door inclusive mobility network across the district. The task force continues to monitor progress closely to ensure timely implementation and adherence to quality standards.
