Synopsis

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed the reconstruction of the Bellasis flyover in record time, finishing about four months earlier than initially planned. The 333 metre bridge, connecting Tardeo, Nagpada and Mumbai Central, was rebuilt after the old British-era structure was deemed unsafe. The project, which started in October 2024, faced challenges such as relocating BEST buses, removing 13 obstructing structures, and addressing legal matters, yet was completed in 15 months and six days. Traffic is expected to improve once the flyover opens next week.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has finished rebuilding the Bellasis flyover and expects to open it to traffic next week, pending the final no objection certificate from the railways. The project was completed in 15 months and six days, around four months ahead of the timeline set in the work order issued in late 2024.

The flyover, spanning 333 metres along Jahangir Boman Behram Marg, links important areas such as Tardeo, Nagpada, and Mumbai Central. It was closed after the old British-era structure was declared unsafe. Its demolition and reconstruction were part of BMC's broader plan to upgrade critical city infrastructure and reduce congestion on central Mumbai roads.

Construction began on October 1, 2024, with BMC handling approach roads, slab casting, deck sheet installation, and girder bracing. The Western Railway coordinated work over railway tracks to ensure alignment with safety standards. Officials worked closely with traffic police and the local ward office to maintain smooth progress despite disruptions.

Several challenges had to be managed, including relocating BEST buses, removing 13 obstructing structures while ensuring proper rehabilitation of affected residents, and resolving legal matters in the High Court. Even heavy monsoon rains were overcome through careful planning and continuous work.

The new flyover features a 7 metre-wide carriageway with broad footpaths on both sides. Once opened, it is expected to improve traffic flows on Jahangir Boman Behram Marg, Dadasaheb Bhadkamkar Marg (Grant Road), Pathe Bapurao Marg, and near the Mahalaxmi station bridge, which have been under strain due to construction-related congestion over the past two years.

Officials confirmed that finishing works, including structural stability tests and load certifications, have been completed. The only pending step is the formal railway clearance, after which vehicles will be allowed on the newly reconstructed route in coordination with the traffic police.
