Synopsis

The Punjab government has approved plans to modernise bus terminals in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Sangrur, Patiala and Bathinda to improve public transport facilities and commuter experience. The upgrades will be carried out through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) models under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. With terminals in Ludhiana and Jalandhar handling up to 1 lakh passengers daily, the initiative focuses on easing congestion and improving efficiency. Planned improvements include better waiting areas, upgraded sanitation, organised boarding, improved safety, lighting and parking facilities, along with barrier-free access. The revamped terminals are also expected to function as integrated urban hubs with commercial amenities, supporting smoother, safer and more convenient travel across key districts in Punjab.

The Punjab government has approved a plan to modernise bus terminals in five major districts as part of its efforts to strengthen public transport infrastructure and enhance commuter convenience. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the state has chosen to upgrade terminals in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Sangrur, Patiala and Bathinda through structured Public-Private Partnership models.

Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said the decision aims to improve the quality and efficiency of services at these transport hubs, which are vital for daily commuting and inter-state travel. Bus terminals in Punjab handle significant passenger volumes, with Ludhiana and Jalandhar terminals seeing between 75,000 and 100,000 travellers daily, and facilities in Patiala and Bathinda hosting around 50,000 passengers each day.

The modernisation initiative is designed to address longstanding infrastructure gaps and operational inefficiencies at existing terminals. Projects will be executed under Design-Build-Finance-Operate-Transfer or Build-Operate-Transfer frameworks to ensure high quality services while maintaining fiscal prudence.

Planned improvements include enhanced waiting areas, upgraded sanitation, improved lighting and signage, organised boarding systems and structured parking. Special attention will be given to circulation, crowd management and safety during peak hours. The designs also incorporate barrier-free access to support ease of movement for senior citizens and persons with disabilities.

In addition to transport improvements, the upgraded terminals are expected to evolve into integrated urban hubs. Subject to applicable norms, commercial and service facilities such as retail outlets, office spaces and logistics support are likely to be incorporated to enhance passenger convenience and long-term sustainability.

Authorities said the project will not disrupt everyday travel and is positioned to support smoother, safer and more accessible public transport across key districts in Punjab.
