Synopsis

The Pune Municipal Corporation has extended its property tax amnesty scheme after collecting INR 713 crore from defaulters during the initial phase. Around 1.24 lakh property owners cleared pending dues by availing a 75% waiver on penalties. The scheme helped ease long-standing tax arrears that had increased due to monthly penalties on delayed payments. Encouraged by the response, the civic body decided to allow more time for additional defaulters to participate. The collections are expected to support municipal finances as budget preparations continue.

The Pune Municipal Corporation has decided to extend its property tax amnesty scheme after receiving a strong response from property owners with pending dues. During the initial phase of the scheme, the civic body collected INR 713 crore, offering relief to defaulters through a significant waiver on penalties.

Under the amnesty programme, property owners were allowed a 75% waiver on penalty charges imposed on delayed tax payments. As per municipal rules, unpaid property taxes attract a 2% monthly penalty, which often leads to dues increasing sharply over time. The waiver reduced the financial burden for defaulters and encouraged quicker settlements.

Data from the civic administration shows that around 1.24 lakh property owners made use of the scheme to clear outstanding taxes. The volume of participation helped PMC achieve higher collections within a shorter period compared to earlier amnesty initiatives. In previous years, similar schemes had generated revenue over longer durations but with relatively lower collections.

Officials indicated that the decision to extend the scheme was based on the steady inflow of payments and requests from property owners seeking additional time to regularise their dues. The extension is expected to help recover further pending taxes without resorting to enforcement measures.

The collections come at a time when the civic body is working on finalising its municipal budget for the upcoming financial year. Revenue from property tax remains one of PMC's key income sources, funding essential civic services and infrastructure maintenance.

The administration has been focusing on improving tax compliance through a mix of digital payment systems, awareness drives, and periodic amnesty schemes. The current response suggests that penalty relief continues to be an effective tool for clearing long-pending arrears while improving overall collection efficiency.
