Dubai is poised to become one of the first global cities to introduce commercial air taxi services, with operations expected to begin by the end of this year, marking a significant milestone in urban mobility innovation. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has partnered with Joby Aviation, a U.S. developer of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, to roll out electric air taxis designed for intra-city and short-distance travel. These aircraft are capable of flying up to 160 kilometres at speeds nearing 320 km/h and produce zero operating emissions, offering an eco-friendly alternative to ground transport. The initiative aims to enhance connectivity, ease road congestion and integrate aerial mobility into Dubai's transport network, subject to regulatory approvals and operational safety clearances.
Dubai plans to launch commercial air taxi services by the end of this year, part of a broader effort to introduce advanced aerial mobility within the emirate's transport ecosystem. Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Chairman Mattar Al Tayer said that electric air taxis developed by U.S.-based Joby Aviation are expected to begin operations during the current year, following successful test flights and preparation of regulatory frameworks.
The air taxis are electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft that can travel distances of up to 160 kilometres at speeds approaching 320 km/h, with zero operating emissions. Designed to operate quietly and efficiently in dense urban environments, these aircraft are being positioned as a complement to existing transport options, offering rapid connectivity between key urban hubs.
Dubai has been working on integrating this advanced mode of transport into its broader mobility strategy, which includes constructing a network of vertiports at strategic locations such as Dubai International Airport, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah. These vertiports are intended to serve as take-off and landing points for aerial taxis, facilitating seamless connections with ground transport.
Joby Aviation holds exclusive rights to operate air taxi services in Dubai under a multi-year agreement with the RTA. The initial rollout will be subject to final regulatory approvals, infrastructure readiness and operational safety clearances, including pilot training, air traffic integration and passenger safety protocols.
The commencement of commercial air taxi operations would place Dubai at the forefront of next-generation urban transport, reflecting its focus on sustainable, tech-enabled mobility solutions that reduce congestion and broaden connectivity across the city.
