NHAI terminates toll collection contract at Bara Fee Plaza over assault allegation

Synopsis

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has terminated the user fee collection contract at the Bara Fee Plaza in Uttar Pradesh after reports of misbehaviour and alleged assault of a highway user. The incident occurred on January 14, 2026, at the toll plaza located on the Lucknow Sultanpur stretch of NH-731. NHAI said it has taken a serious view of the matter and ended the contract of the toll collection agency, M/s Skylark Infra Engineering Pvt Ltd. In addition, the authority has issued a show-cause notice to the agency and proposed debarring it from participating in NHAI bids for one year. NHAI has also proposed forfeiture and encashment of bank guarantees worth INR 5.3 crore linked to the contract.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Friday announced the termination of the user fee collection contract at the Bara Fee Plaza in Uttar Pradesh following an alleged assault on a National Highway user.


In a statement, NHAI said it has terminated the contract of the user fee collection agency, M/s Skylark Infra Engineering Pvt Ltd, after reports that a highway user was allegedly assaulted at the Bara Fee Plaza on the Lucknow Sultanpur section of NH-731 on January 14, 2026.

Taking a serious view of the incident, NHAI said it has issued a show-cause notice to the agency, seeking an explanation for the alleged misconduct. The authority has also proposed debarring the agency from participating in any bids or contracts of NHAI for a period of one year.

Further, NHAI said it has proposed the forfeiture and encashment of the bank guarantee and performance security amounting to INR 5.3 crore submitted by the agency in connection with the existing contract at the Bara Fee Plaza.

NHAI reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity and fair treatment of National Highway users and said strict action will be taken against any agency found violating contractual obligations or engaging in misconduct.
