Indian Railways has launched nine new Amrit Bharat Express trains to provide expanded, affordable long-distance connectivity across India, with the aim of offering reliable and budget-friendly options for travellers undertaking interstate journeys. The new services were announced earlier this week and are part of the government?s focus on enhancing accessibility in long-distance rail travel.
According to official information, the nine Amrit Bharat Express services will start from termini in West Bengal and Assam and traverse several states including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka. The routes are structured to link eastern, northern and southern regions of the country, thereby broadening the reach of affordable train travel for millions of commuters, students, workers and families.
Amrit Bharat Express is a category of long-distance, locomotive-hauled passenger trains designed as non-air-conditioned services that remain affordable while offering some upgraded features compared with ordinary express trains. These include improved seating arrangements, better toilets and modern safety systems to enhance overall passenger experience without significantly increasing fares. The fare structure is aimed at being simple and transparent, with lower pricing proportionate to distance travelled, making it suitable for cost-conscious long-distance travellers and those commuting during festive or peak seasons.
The new services include routes such as Kamakhya?Rohtak and Dibrugarh?Lucknow Gomti Nagar, among others, reflecting Indian Railways? intent to strengthen links between key urban, regional and rural centres. The introduction of these trains is expected to help redistribute passenger flows, reduce pressure on existing services and improve accessibility to rail transport for long-distance journeys.
The Amrit Bharat Express trains also incorporate features intended to support reliable operations, handle heavy passenger volumes and provide consistent performance across diverse geographic stretches. By catering to both daily travel needs and long-distance movement for employment, education and social purposes, Indian Railways aims to make rail travel more inclusive. The new services are part of ongoing efforts to modernise and expand rail infrastructure while maintaining affordability for the majority of passengers.
