The Tambaram railway station in Chennai is poised for an ambitious INR 890-crore redevelopment aimed at transforming it into a modern transit hub capable of handling significantly higher passenger volumes and enhanced services. The Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA) is preparing to float tenders under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with project completion expected within three years. Key aspects of the revamp include increasing the station's peak-hour handling capacity from around 13,500 to 28,750 passengers, adding three new platforms, expanding tracks from 12 to 16, and constructing a direct-access platform from the east entrance to reduce reliance on foot overbridges. Additional improvements will include a new concourse, more foot overbridges, and upgraded station facades that align with broader modernization efforts in the Southern Railway zone.
The Tambaram railway station in Chennai is set to receive a substantial INR 890-crore upgrade that will reconfigure the station into a modernised transit hub, significantly expanding its capacity and passenger amenities over the next three years. The initiative, led by the Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA) under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, reflects Indian Railways broader strategy to enhance suburban and regional transport infrastructure.
Once completed, the redevelopment will nearly double the station's peak-hour passenger handling capacity from approximately 13,500 to around 28,750 commuters enabling it to better accommodate the growing number of daily travellers. This jump in capacity is critical for Tambaram, one of the busiest suburban and long-distance rail nodes in South India, serving millions of passengers annually.
A central part of the plan involves expanding physical infrastructure. The number of railway tracks will rise from 12 to 16, and three additional platforms will be constructed to facilitate greater train movement and reduce congestion. Work is already underway on a platform that can be accessed directly from the east entrance, which is expected to improve passenger flow by minimising dependence on foot overbridges and escalators.
The revamp will also include the construction of a first-level concourse, additional foot overbridges, and modernised facades for both the east and west sides of the station, contributing to a more organised and commuter-friendly layout. These improvements are expected to enhance user experience and align Tambaram's infrastructure with contemporary transit standards seen at major stations.
Officials have highlighted that Tambaram's abundant space makes it suitable for a redevelopment scale even larger than neighbouring stations like Egmore, which are constrained by land availability. The upgrade is also part of efforts to enable more express trains to originate and terminate at Tambaram, relieving pressure on central Chennai terminals and supporting the region's expanding rail network.
Stakeholder consultations are ongoing, and the current redevelopment plan may be refined further with input from local agencies, commuters and experts as tenders are prepared and phased execution begins.
