The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) has begun showcasing model houses for families affected by the proposed Parandur greenfield airport in Kancheepuram district. The 400 sq ft demonstration homes, built near the Parandur primary health centre, allow residents from 13 impacted villages to review housing options under the rehabilitation plan. The state's relief package includes land compensation ranging from INR 35 lakh to INR 60 lakh per acre, along with choices of alternate housing plots with built homes or cash options. TIDCO has also outlined plans for integrated townships with schools, hospitals and civic amenities. While the initiative aims to ensure transparent resettlement, community responses remain mixed.

The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) has taken a significant step in the resettlement process for villagers affected by the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur in Kancheepuram district by erecting model houses for prospective beneficiaries. The demonstration homes, each measuring approximately 400 sq ft, have been constructed near the Parandur primary health centre to allow affected families to view and choose preferred housing designs as part of the rehabilitation and resettlement plan.


These model houses form part of a broader compensation and support package offered by the state government to residents of 13 villages impacted by the airport project. TIDCO has also developed audio-visual presentations to inform villagers about proposed township amenities, including schools, hospitals and other civic infrastructure, and to explain the relief measures available to those surrendering their land and homes for the airport.

Under the relief framework, agricultural landowners are offered compensation ranging from INR 35 lakh to INR 60 lakh per acre. In addition to monetary compensation, villagers may receive alternative housing sites ranging from five to ten cents with a constructed house, or opt to take a cash alternative. The package also includes provisions for shops, job support, subsistence allowances and access to loans, reflecting a multi-faceted approach to rehabilitation.

TIDCO's master plan for resettlement, prepared with consultancy support, envisages coordinated development for around 1,005 families across integrated townships spanning approximately 242 acres in nearby villages. This effort is being rolled out concurrently with ongoing land acquisition for the airport project, which covers roughly 5,000 acres.

However, the resettlement initiative has met with mixed reactions on the ground. While TIDCO aims to demonstrate transparent and structured options for displaced families, some community representatives have expressed reluctance to engage with the model homes, citing environmental and livelihood concerns related to the airport development. These reservations underscore the challenges inherent in balancing infrastructure expansion with community consensus and environmental safeguards.
