Synopsis

The final section of Phase II of the Ahmedabad Gandhinagar metro was inaugurated earlier this week by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, completing the rail link between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. The stretch connects Sector 10A to Mahatma Mandir, adding seven stations at key locations including Sachivalaya, Akshardham Temple, old Sachivalaya, and Sectors 16 and 24. Covering a total of 28.2 km with 22 stations, the corridor is expected to improve daily commuting, reduce road congestion, and strengthen urban connectivity. Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Shri Harsh Sanghavi were present at the launch.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the remaining stretch of Phase II of the Ahmedabad Gandhinagar metro earlier this week, completing a major part of the corridor that now fully links Ahmedabad with Gandhinagar. The newly operational section runs from Sector 10A in Gandhinagar to the Mahatma Mandir Convention Centre, adding seven new stations to the network.

The stretch passes through Sachivalaya complex, Akshardham Temple, old Sachivalaya, and Sectors 16 and 24, serving key residential and administrative areas. The corridor is part of Phase II, which extends the existing metro network and is designed to cover 28.2 km with 22 stations, according to the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited.

Prime Minister Modi flagged off the metro service from Mahatma Mandir station, formally starting operations. He noted that the new stretch would improve the Ease of Living for residents of both cities, highlighting that enhanced public transport is a priority for urban development.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi accompanied the Prime Minister during the inauguration. After the ceremony, both leaders traveled on the metro to Sachivalaya, interacting with passengers and witnessing the service in operation.

Earlier segments of Phase II had been inaugurated in September 2024, gradually connecting parts of Ahmedabad with Gandhinagar. The completion of this stretch ensures uninterrupted metro travel between the two cities, facilitating smoother daily commutes and reducing reliance on private vehicles.

Officials from Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. highlighted that the extension will provide easier access to administrative offices, civic hubs, and popular local landmarks, reinforcing sustainable urban mobility. The metro project is part of wider efforts to modernize public transport in Gujarat and improve city-level connectivity.
