Synopsis

InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, parent company of IndiGo, has informed stock exchanges that its appeal against penalties imposed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been rejected by the aviation appellate authority. The case relates to pilot training conducted for Category C airports, which the regulator found was carried out using simulators not approved for such demanding operations. The DGCA had imposed fines of INR 20 lakh each on IndiGo's Director of Flight Operations and Director of Training. The airline had challenged the order, but the authority upheld the regulator's decision. IndiGo stated the penalties will not impact operations or finances. Following the update, the airline's shares fell around one percent in intraday trade.

InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, the parent company of IndiGo, informed stock exchanges that its appeal against penalties imposed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been rejected by the aviation appellate authority. The matter relates to findings by the regulator that pilot training for certain Category C airports was conducted using simulators that were not approved for such operations.

Category C airports are classified as operationally demanding due to factors such as terrain, runway characteristics and weather conditions. The DGCA had concluded that training for these airports requires certified Full Flight Simulators that meet specific regulatory standards. Its review found that simulators used by IndiGo did not meet these requirements for Category C operations.

As part of the enforcement action, the DGCA imposed penalties of INR 20 lakh each on IndiGo's Director of Flight Operations and Director of Training. The airline had challenged this order, arguing its case before the appellate authority, which has now upheld the regulator's decision in full.

The issue came to light after the DGCA examined pilot training records and simulator certifications. The regulator noted that a large number of pilots had undergone training on simulators that were not qualified for Category C airports. Training activities had taken place at multiple simulator facilities, including those located in cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and the National Capital Region.

IndiGo had earlier disclosed that it was contesting the penalties and stated that the fines would not have a material impact on its financial position or daily operations. Following the rejection of its appeal, the airline reiterated its compliance with safety standards while acknowledging the regulatory outcome.

After the development was made public, IndiGo's shares declined by about one per cent during intraday trade, indicating a measured market response to the regulatory setback.
