Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai has taken platforms 16 and 17 out of service for 85 days to allow redevelopment work as part of its larger station overhaul. Central Railway has imposed traffic and power blocks from early February until late April to enable foundational strengthening and allied infrastructure improvements under the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA). During this period, several long-distance trains are being short-terminated at Dadar or Thane. The redevelopment project, approved in late 2022 and being implemented by Ahluwalia Contracts Limited at a cost of INR 2,450 crore, includes new passenger facilities, parcel buildings, footbridges and skywalks.
Operation from platforms 16 and 17 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai has been suspended for 85 days due to ongoing redevelopment work. The closure started in early February and will continue through late April this year. Central Railway officials say the platforms are undergoing foundational strengthening and related infrastructure work, which requires traffic and power blocks for safety and structural reasons.
Because of this block, regular train operations from these two platforms are paused. Several long-distance trains that normally originate or terminate at CSMT are being short-terminated at nearby stations such as Dadar and Thane. Trains affected at Dadar include the AmravatiCSMT Express (12112), Ballarshah CSMT Nandigram Express (11002), Howrah CSMT Express (12810), Bhubaneswar CSMT Konark Express (11020), Bidar CSMT Express (22144) / Latur CSMT Express (22108) and Madgaon CSMT Tejas Express (22120). The Mangaluru CSMT Express (12134) is being short-terminated at Thane. Passengers have been advised to check revised schedules and plan travel accordingly.
The redevelopment work at CSMT is being overseen by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) and executed by Ahluwalia Contracts Limited. The plan for this redevelopment was approved by Central Railway in late 2022. The total project cost is pegged at INR 2,450 crore and spans about 461,534 square metres, combining new construction and renovation. The work includes dedicated buildings for passenger facilities and parcel services, elevated decks linking mail/express and local trains, footbridges, skywalks, and restructuring open areas near the heritage station building to improve crowd movement. A perimeter wall is also being built to prevent unauthorised entry.
Railway officials have emphasised that these blocks are essential for infrastructure development and asked commuters to accommodate the temporary changes. They highlight that once the work is completed and the platforms are handed back for traffic operations, regular train services will resume fully. The station redevelopment is part of broader efforts to modernise CSMT while preserving its heritage character and boosting capacity and passenger amenities.
