Synopsis

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has initiated the preparation of a mini sewerage master plan for Nanakramguda and the Financial District to address rising sewage loads from rapid commercial and residential development. The plan will assess existing sewer lines, stormwater drains and treatment capacity, while aligning future infrastructure with the Hyderabad 2047 Master Plan. Officials have been directed to ensure separation of sewage and stormwater systems and propose network upgrades and trunk mains to prevent pollution of the Musi river and nearby water bodies.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has begun work on a dedicated mini sewerage master plan for Nanakramguda and the Financial District, areas that have seen sharp growth in offices, high-rise housing and supporting infrastructure. The move is aimed at strengthening the sewerage network and preparing it for future demand without putting pressure on existing systems.

HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy reviewed the status of sewerage infrastructure in the zone and directed officials to prepare the plan based on a detailed assessment of current drains, sewer lines and stormwater channels. The exercise will map sewage generation levels, identify gaps in the network and recommend new trunk mains and upgrades where required. The plan is being aligned with the long-term Hyderabad 2047 Master Plan to ensure consistency with the city's overall infrastructure roadmap.

Officials have been asked to ensure strict separation of sewage pipelines and stormwater drains, a step considered critical to prevent untreated wastewater from entering the Musi river and surrounding lakes. Past instances of mixed drainage systems have contributed to pollution during heavy rainfall, making this separation a key focus area.

The board has also sought a detailed review of the sewage treatment plant (STP) catchment serving Nanakramguda, including current capacity and projected requirements. Proposals to enhance treatment capacity, either through expansion of existing facilities or diversion of flows to nearby STPs, are part of the planning process. In this context, officials were asked to examine options to divert sewage from parts of Gachibowli and Kokapet to the Kokapet STP through new trunk mains, while also addressing sewage flow from low-lying pockets.

HMWSSB's approach builds on earlier efforts to expand sewage treatment capacity across Hyderabad, where multiple STPs have been commissioned over recent years to handle growing wastewater volumes. The focused planning for Nanakramguda and the Financial District reflects the need for localised solutions in fast-developing urban clusters.
