Synopsis

C.J. Roy, founder and chairman of Confident Group, died by suicide at his Bengaluru office while Income Tax officials were conducting ongoing searches linked to earlier investigations into his business. Roy, in his late 50s and financially sound with zero debts, faced significant pressure from the federal agency, according to family members. Bengaluru Police have formed a Special Investigation Team to examine the incident, which occurred during a three-day tax verification process. His death has shocked the real estate community, drawing condolences from peers, industry leaders, and political figures.

C.J. Roy, the founder and chairman of Confident Group, died by suicide at his Bengaluru office in the afternoon while officials from the Income Tax Department were present, Bengaluru Police confirmed. The incident took place during a three-day ongoing tax search. Roy, in his late 50s, sustained bullet injuries from his licensed firearm. Staff discovered him after hearing the shot and rushed him to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Police stated that the Income Tax searches on his company premises had begun around two months earlier, with officials from Kerala visiting in December and again in late January, having called Roy back from Dubai. Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh said the exact circumstances are under investigation, and forensic, ballistic, and crime teams inspected the office. A Special Investigation Team has been formed to record statements and examine all aspects of the case.

Roy's family suggested that the pressures from the Income Tax officials contributed to his decision. His brother said Roy was financially sound, had no debts, and maintained a healthy bank balance. He added that the chairman had been under intense stress over the past three to four days despite attempts at reassurance.

Known for his philanthropic initiatives, Roy often supported underprivileged groups and had promised flats to winners from real estate exhibitions. He also had a passion for automobiles, including his cherished Maruti-800, and had produced four Malayalam films. Under his leadership, Confident Group became one of the leading real estate developers in Kerala and Bengaluru, completing multiple projects across the region and consistently ranking among the top developers.

The death has shocked the real estate sector, with thousands of customers and colleagues mourning his passing. Industry figures, including chef and entrepreneur Suresh Pillai and businessman Gokulam Gopalan, paid tribute to Roy, praising his integrity, generosity, and mentorship. Confident Group issued a statement calling him a beloved leader and reaffirming their commitment to his vision and values.
