Synopsis

The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has formalised plans to hand over five residential colonies and a sewage treatment facility to the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC), accompanied by a financial package of INR 66 crore to complete pending infrastructure work, according to official sources. The colonies earmarked for transfer include Swarn Jyantipuram, parts of Karpuri Puram, Bhaurao Devrash Colony, Pratap Vihar, Govindpuram and a portion of Raj Nagar Extension, along with a 56 million litre per day sewage treatment plant in Madhuban Bapudham. Under the agreement, the funds will be released in two equal instalments to support essential civic works such as water supply, road networks and sewer systems. The handover marks progress in resolving long-standing delays in transferring developed townships to municipal authorities, and is expected to improve service delivery for residents.

The Ghaziabad Development Authority has taken a significant step towards resolving protracted infrastructure and administrative issues by moving to hand over five residential colonies to the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC). As part of the arrangement, the GDA will allocate INR 66 crore to support the completion of outstanding civic work in these areas, officials said.

The colonies slated for transfer, which will be handed over either partially or fully to the GMC, include Swarn Jyantipuram, B Block in Karpuri Puram, Bhaurao Devrash Colony, KB Block in Pratap Vihar, CP Block in Govindpuram, and a section of Raj Nagar Extension that runs along Pusta Road. In addition to these residential areas, a 56 million litres-per-day capacity sewage treatment plant located in Madhuban Bapudham will also be transferred to the municipal corporation.

According to a GDA official, the INR 66 crore commitment will be disbursed in two equal instalments, with the first expected by February and the second by March. The funds are intended to address pending infrastructure requirements, with specific emphasis on strengthening water supply networks, road infrastructure and sewer systems in the affected colonies. A GMC representative noted that a detailed survey of existing infrastructure gaps had been completed and that improvements would commence soon after the release of funds.

The move comes against the backdrop of long-standing delays in transferring GDA-developed townships to municipal authorities. In some cases, developed areas such as Indirapuram have waited more than a decade before formal handover could be achieved due to litigation, incomplete infrastructure provision and bureaucratic hurdles. Six major townships developed by the GDA, including Madhuban Bapudham, Indraprastha and Swarn Jyantipuram, have been awaiting transfer for more than 20 years, underlining the complexity of the process.

Officials said that this transfer arrangement reflects a new understanding between the GDA and GMC to expedite civic improvements and standardise the handover process for developed townships. The aim is to ensure that once the infrastructure work is completed, GMC will assume responsibility for ongoing maintenance and service delivery, ultimately benefiting residents who have long anticipated better civic amenities.

The inclusion of the sewage treatment plant in the handover package is expected to improve sanitation and wastewater management in the surrounding area, complementing the broader set of infrastructure upgrades planned under the financial package.

Overall, the agreement marks a notable step in addressing urban development challenges in Ghaziabad, with implications for improving living standards and civic services in these long-standing residential areas.
