The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation undertook a special plastic enforcement campaign earlier this month to curb the use of plastic carry bags and single-use plastic within its jurisdiction. The initiative, carried out between January 22 and January 28, was implemented in accordance with instructions received from the Central Pollution Control Board and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. During the four-day drive, the civic body collected INR 65,000 as penalty from violators and confiscated approximately 18 kg of plastic bags from commercial establishments operating across various nodes of the city.
The enforcement exercise was carried out across all ward office areas following directions issued by Municipal Commissioner Kailas Shinde. The campaign was supervised by senior civic officials, including the additional municipal commissioner and officers from the solid waste management department, with coordinated inspections conducted across both administrative circles of the city.
According to data shared by the corporation, action in the Belapur ward resulted in penalties amounting to INR 10,000 being levied on two commercial establishments, along with the seizure of 1 kg of plastic bags. In Nerul, one establishment was penalised INR 5,000 and around 2 kg of plastic bags were confiscated. Similar action in Vashi led to a fine of INR 5,000 and the seizure of 1 kg of plastic carry bags from a trader.
In Turbhe, enforcement teams imposed fines totalling INR 10,000 on two establishments and seized 6 kg of plastic bags. The Koparkhairane ward recorded penalties of INR 5,000 along with the confiscation of 1 kg of plastic. In Ghansoli, inspections conducted by the ward office resulted in fines amounting to INR 20,000 from four commercial entities and the seizure of 7 kg of plastic bags. Additionally, the flying squad of administrative Circle 2 recovered INR 10,000 in penalties and confiscated around 1.5 kg of plastic bags during surprise checks.
The municipal corporation stated that alongside enforcement, continuous awareness campaigns are being conducted through multiple platforms to discourage citizens from using plastic carry bags. As part of the Plastic-Free Navi Mumbai campaign, the civic body has also been working in collaboration with Project Mumbai to promote the adoption of cloth bags and sustainable alternatives, urging residents and traders to eliminate single-use plastic from daily use.
