The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is advancing the construction of the 650 metre Vikhroli-Vidyavihar east-west flyover, designed to connect Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg with Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg over Vidyavihar railway station. Officials have instructed completing major works by the end of May to avoid monsoon delays, while the flyover is scheduled to open to traffic by June 25. Key tasks include finalising approach roads, removing affected structures, revising road alignments, and completing railway station access works, including pedestrian connectivity and reconstructed ticket counters.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is steadily progressing with the construction of the Vikhroli-Vidyavihar flyover, a 650 metre, two lane bridge that will serve as a major east-west connector over Vidyavihar railway station. The flyover links Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg on the eastern side with Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg on the western side. The civic body has set a firm deadline for opening the flyover to traffic by June 25, ensuring that most essential works are completed before the upcoming monsoon.
Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar, during a recent inspection, directed officials to complete the eastern side works by the end of February and finish major construction activities on both sides by the end of May. On the eastern side, the approach road and surfacing are in the final stage, while on the western side, six of the ten piers are completed, with the remaining piers, bridge span, and approach roads under construction.
Officials are also focusing on removing residential and commercial structures affected by construction on the western side. A revised road alignment has been finalised to maintain construction momentum and ensure that traffic flow is minimally disrupted. The BMC has prioritised road works on both sides of the flyover to create maximum space for vehicles during ongoing construction, and once these are completed, re-alignment and demolition of remaining structures are expected to accelerate overall progress.
The project also includes improved access to Vidyavihar railway station. Ticket counters on both sides, the station master's office, and staircases have been reconstructed. Additionally, a pedestrian subway within the railway premises is being linked to the adjacent road via stairways, ensuring smoother movement for commuters and connecting the flyover to station platforms.
Traffic diversion and space constraints remain challenges, especially on the western approach. Officials continue to manage this by phasing road works and coordinating construction schedules carefully. When opened, the flyover is expected to ease traffic congestion in the Ghatkopar-Vikhroli corridor significantly and improve connectivity for daily commuters across one of Mumbai's busiest zones.
