Andhra Pradesh is working to strengthen its logistics system by improving rail connectivity to ports, industrial centres and neighbouring states. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has asked officials to speed up railway projects to support cargo movement, especially horticulture and industrial goods. The Chief Minister highlighted that the state produces over 22 million tonnes of horticultural output every year, which needs faster and more reliable transport to domestic and export markets. He asked officials to ensure strong rail connectivity between ports such as Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Machilipatnam and the upcoming Moolapeta port, and production centres within the state and in neighbouring regions.
Naidu also underlined the importance of improving rail links for cargo coming from Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, noting that better inter-state connectivity would increase port utilisation and lower freight costs. He pointed out that the Tirupati-Renigunta region is emerging as a key industrial hub and requires improved railway infrastructure to support manufacturing and logistics activities.
As part of station modernisation, 73 railway stations in Andhra Pradesh are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station scheme, with completion targeted by 2027. The upgrades are expected to improve passenger facilities while also enhancing operational efficiency for freight movement. The Chief Minister further called for stronger rail connectivity between the Rayalaseema region and Coastal Andhra to support balanced regional development.
The state government has proposed four new railway lines between Ichchapuram and Tada and has sought detailed project reports for these corridors. Officials have been asked to fast-track execution with a goal of completing the projects within three years. At present, around 39 railway projects covering more than 2,300 km are underway across the state, involving an estimated investment of about INR 34,300 crore. Around 200 km of new railway lines are expected to be completed during the current year.
In addition, the government is looking to improve rail links connecting the capital region with major cities such as Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai, while also examining proposals for high-speed rail corridors to support future transport needs.
