Synopsis

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is moving forward with the construction of a six-lane underpass at Bakhtawar Chowk to reduce traffic congestion on the busy Subhash Marg corridor. The project has been allocated INR 80 crore and will span about 550 metres, including two surface lanes for local traffic. It is being coordinated with the Sector 47 metro station on the Millennium City Centre-Cyber City corridor. The underpass replaces an earlier flyover plan and reflects years of planning to streamline vehicle movement in the area.

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is set to begin the construction of a six-lane underpass at Bakhtawar Chowk, a key junction on Subhash Marg, which handles heavy daily traffic. The authority has sanctioned INR 80 crore for the project, which will cover approximately 550 metres and include additional surface lanes to accommodate local traffic. Gurgaon Metro Rail Limited (GMRL) will execute the project, ensuring coordination with the nearby Sector 47 metro station on the Millennium City Centre-Cyber City corridor.

The underpass will feature six main lanes for through traffic and two surface lanes for local vehicles, reducing congestion at this vital intersection. Both the underpass and the metro station are designed to share pillars at the junction, optimising space in the dense urban area. GMRL has submitted the detailed design to GMDA and requested priority approval, alongside necessary permissions for tree removal along the alignment. A GMDA official stated that in-principle approval has been granted, and final approvals are expected soon. Traffic management plans for the construction period have been included to limit disruption for commuters.

Originally, a flyover was proposed at Bakhtawar Chowk in 2021 to address congestion. However, in 2023, the plan was revised to an underpass after metro alignment considerations emerged. Subsequent delays meant the project could not start as initially planned, prompting GMRL to take over execution responsibilities to better synchronise with metro development. The project is part of GMDA's long-term strategy to decongest key junctions along the inner ring road, which connects Atul Kataria Chowk, Signature Tower, Millennium City Centre, Hero Honda Chowk, and other commercial sectors.

Bakhtawar Chowk regularly sees more than 10,000 passenger car units during peak hours. Past attempts to improve traffic flow were delayed due to alignment issues and coordination challenges with other infrastructure projects. The new underpass is expected to significantly improve commuting conditions while supporting the growing commercial and residential development in the surrounding sectors, including the upcoming IKEA store in Sector 47.

Among the six major upgrades planned along the inner ring road, four have already been completed, while Bakhtawar Chowk and the stretch from Hero Honda Chowk to Umang Bharadwaj Chowk are still pending. Integrating the underpass with the metro infrastructure is considered essential to optimise space and minimise future traffic disruptions. Once operational, it is expected to streamline vehicle movement during peak hours and reduce congestion in one of Gurugram's busiest traffic zones.
