The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) has revised toll rates for the 91.3 km Gorakhpur Link Expressway, setting INR 285 for a one-way trip for private cars, which equals about INR 3.12 per kilometre. Officials explained that the higher toll reflects the increased costs due to alignment changes, monsoon damage, and complex engineering requirements like bridges and interchanges. The four-lane expressway, inaugurated last year, connects eastern Uttar Pradesh districts and integrates with the broader expressway network, aiming to improve regional connectivity and travel efficiency.
The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) has announced higher toll rates for the Gorakhpur Link Expressway. Vehicle owners traveling a single trip along the 91.3 km corridor will now pay INR 285 for private cars. This toll translates to approximately INR 3.12 per kilometre, making it higher than most other expressways in the state.
The expressway originates from Salarpur town in Azamgarh district and ends at Jaitpur in Gorakhpur, passing through Ambedkar Nagar and Sant Kabir Nagar districts. Constructed as a four-lane access-controlled corridor, the project was inaugurated last year to strengthen connectivity within eastern Uttar Pradesh and link with the broader expressway network, including the Purvanchal Expressway.
Officials highlighted that several factors contributed to the higher toll. Construction of the expressway took more than five years, and the original alignment had to be revised three to four times due to unforeseen challenges. Monsoon seasons in 2023 and 2024 caused significant damage when the Ghaghra river changed its course, washing away embankments and bridge structures. These events escalated costs and extended the project timeline.
In addition, a large portion of expenditure went into building critical structures such as bridges, underpasses, and interchanges. UPEIDA noted that cost overruns due to extended timelines and complex engineering requirements necessitated a steeper toll to cover the investment.
For comparison, motorists traveling on the Lucknow-Agra, Bundelkhand, and Purvanchal expressways pay toll rates of INR 2.20, INR 2.14, and INR 2 per kilometre, respectively. The revised rate for the Gorakhpur Link Expressway reflects both the higher construction costs and the need to maintain the corridor as a high-quality, access-controlled route.
Officials emphasized that the toll structure ensures the expressway remains safe and sustainable while providing faster and more efficient travel for commuters and transporters across eastern Uttar Pradesh.
