Rail development in Uttarakhand is progressing steadily, with the newly constructed Roorkee Deoband rail line now ready for commissioning. This 27.45 km line enhances connectivity between Roorkee and Deoband and includes new stations at Banhera Khas and Jhabrera. It marks a significant addition to the state's expanding railway network, improving travel options for residents and regional commuters.
Work on the Rishikesh Karnaprayag rail project, spanning 125.2 km, is advancing rapidly. This project includes 12 stations, 35 bridges, and 17 tunnels, cutting through challenging Himalayan terrain. Officials reported that work on major tunnels has reached nearly 94% completion, indicating substantial progress in one of the most complex engineering projects in the region. The line is expected to facilitate better access to remote areas while supporting increasing tourist and pilgrimage traffic.
Station redevelopment is also underway under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Harrawala, Roorkee, and Kotdwar stations are being upgraded to improve passenger facilities and handle higher traffic efficiently. These efforts are aimed at modernizing the infrastructure while maintaining operational readiness, particularly for major events like the upcoming Ardh Kumbh, ensuring devotees and travelers can access safer and smoother services.
State officials and railway managers highlighted these updates in recent discussions with the Chief Minister. They reviewed both completed and ongoing projects, emphasizing timely preparations for rail and passenger facilities. The integrated approach combining line commissioning, tunnel construction, and station upgrades reflects a broader strategy to strengthen Uttarakhand's railway network, catering to both local commuters and visitors to the state.
