Synopsis

Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has begun setting up electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 25 bus depots in the Greater Hyderabad area to support the planned deployment of 2,200 electric buses this year. Additional stations will come up at Suryapet, Sangareddy, and Nalgonda depots. Officials have estimated a 124 MW power requirement for these facilities and coordinated with the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company to ensure proper electrical infrastructure. Work is expected to begin soon, with cost estimates targeted for completion by early February.

The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation has started installing electric vehicle charging stations at 25 bus depots within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation area. This initiative is part of a larger plan to introduce 2,200 electric buses in the city within the year, marking a significant step in the state's move toward electrified public transport.

In addition to the Hyderabad depots, two charging points will be established at Suryapet, while Sangareddy and Nalgonda will each receive a single charging station. RTC officials highlighted that operating these stations would require approximately 124 megawatts of power. Detailed discussions were conducted regarding the necessary infrastructure, including provision for switching stations and substations at depot locations to ensure seamless electricity connections.

The Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited held coordination meetings with TGSRTC to assess power requirements, review technical feasibility, and determine the best approach to supply consistent electricity to the charging stations. TGSRTC Vice Chairman and Managing Director Y. Nagi Reddy mentioned that the corporation is providing space at available depots to set up these essential facilities and is committed to a large-scale rollout of electric buses across Greater Hyderabad within the year.

TGSPDCL Chairman Musharraf Faruqui directed officials to examine the applications submitted by TGSRTC, prepare cost estimates by February 1, and commence the installation of the charging stations immediately after approvals. These steps are crucial to ensure that the growing electric bus fleet can operate efficiently and reliably.

The RTC has previously undertaken measures to expand its electric fleet gradually, with prior introductions of smaller batches of electric buses and associated charging infrastructure. This current initiative builds on those efforts, ensuring that adequate power supply, depot support, and charging facilities are in place to sustain the electrification of public transport in Hyderabad.
