Synopsis

Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd has partnered with ABB India to develop propulsion systems and enable technology transfer for 25 kV driverless metro projects. The agreement covers design, manufacturing, supply, testing, installation supervision, and TCMS technology transfer. TRSL will also gradually co-produce converters and traction motors. Building on a prior alliance with ABB, this collaboration strengthens India's metro TCMS capabilities for both 750 V and 25 kV systems. TRSL's Uttarpara facility is set to become a major manufacturing hub for metro and high-speed trains, supporting India's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) has entered into an agreement with ABB India Ltd to develop propulsion systems and facilitate technology transfer for 25 kV driverless metro projects across India. Under this collaboration, ABB India will assist in designing, manufacturing, supplying, testing, supervising installation, and commissioning propulsion systems. The partnership also includes transferring technology for the train control and monitoring system (TCMS) for 25 kV AC metro operations, according to TRSL's announcement to the stock exchanges.

The agreement also allows for a gradual transfer of manufacturing expertise and co-production of converters and traction motors. TRSL has previously secured a contract to supply 240 metro coaches 132 cars for Line 5 and 108 cars for Line 6 of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) metro projects.

This collaboration builds on TRSL's strategic alliance with ABB, first announced in November 2023, and completes its TCMS portfolio for both 750 V and 25 kV metro traction systems operating in India. The company had earlier acquired TCMS technology for 750 V metro systems from ABB and established a dedicated TCMS laboratory at its Bengaluru design centre.

Titagarh Rail Systems vice chairman and managing director Umesh Chowdhary stated that the agreement represents a significant step toward India achieving self-reliance in advanced railway technologies, aligning with the government's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision. TRSL's Uttarpara facility in West Bengal is being developed as a comprehensive manufacturing hub for aluminium and stainless-steel metro coaches, Vande Bharat trains, and other passenger rolling stock. This facility is supported by a 1.6-km test track made possible through recent land acquisition.
