Synopsis

Chennai's long-delayed Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) extension between Velachery and St Thomas Mount is now scheduled to open in February, offering seamless daily rail connectivity across the city's south-eastern and south-western corridors after nearly two decades of postponements. The 4.5 km link will add three stations at Adambakkam, Puzhuthivakkam and St Thomas Mount, allowing commuters to travel from Chennai Beach to St Thomas Mount without changing trains, once final safety clearance is secured. The project, which has faced repeated setbacks primarily due to land acquisition hurdles and overlaps with Chennai Metro Phase II works, has now completed final trial runs. The extension is expected to significantly improve east-west and north-south rail connectivity, integrate with the metro and suburban networks, and enhance commuter convenience in the rapidly growing Chennai metropolitan area.

After almost 20 years of delays, the long-awaited extension of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) between Velachery and St Thomas Mount in Chennai is set for launch in February, according to recent infrastructure updates. The 4.5 km stretch will add three new stations at Adambakkam, Puzhuthivakkam and St Thomas Mount  and will enable commuters to travel directly from Chennai Beach to St Thomas Mount without the need to transfer trains, once safety approvals are granted by the Commissioner of Railway Safety.

The project has been under construction for many years and has encountered a series of setbacks, predominantly due to land acquisition issues and conflicts with Chennai Metro Phase II construction activities. Final trial runs have now been successfully completed, leaving the line poised for operational clearance. Transport planners say the extension will strengthen the city's rail infrastructure by providing a continuous link between the existing MRTS network and key multimodal hubs in the south of Chennai.

The integration of the extended MRTS line with the Chennai Metro and suburban rail networks at St Thomas Mount is expected to offer commuters greater flexibility and smoother transfers between different modes of transport. Once operational, the new stations will serve residential and commercial catchments in south-east and south-west Chennai, enhancing connectivity for daily commuters and reducing reliance on road-based transport in one of India's most traffic-congested metropolitan regions.

The Mumbai-style local rail model of the MRTS has long been seen as a key element of Chennai's overall public transport ecosystem, complementing the suburban rail and metro systems. Completion of this extension marks a significant milestone in the city's efforts to expand its urban rail footprint, improve accessibility in emerging suburban zones and support sustainable mobility.

Officials and commuters alike have welcomed the progress, noting that the full link will not only save time on longer commutes but will also enhance last-mile connectivity through integration with metro, bus and suburban rail services. The February launch is therefore anticipated to be a major upgrade for the city's transport network.
