Dubai-based logistics operator DP World has signed an agreement with the Government of Madhya Pradesh to develop the Powarkheda Logistics Composite Hub, a rail-linked inland logistics gateway designed to bolster export competitiveness and strengthen supply chain infrastructure in Central India. The pact was exchanged at the World Economic Forum in Davos in the presence of DP World Group Chairman & CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, reflecting the state's strategic intent to integrate into national and global trade corridors. The Powarkheda hub, planned across about 88.3 acres, will offer containerised export-import rail connectivity to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at Nhava Sheva, domestic rail links to key consumption centres, warehousing and temperature-controlled cold storage, and on-site container services. It will also provide leased land for value-addition, processing and cargo aggregation, aimed at reducing logistics costs, improving reliability and driving inclusive growth for farmers, MSMEs and industry players.
UAE-based logistics major DP World has entered into an agreement with the Government of Madhya Pradesh to develop the Powarkheda Logistics Composite Hub, an inland logistics gateway intended to strengthen India's export competitiveness and accelerate economic growth in the central part of the country. The agreement was exchanged during the World Economic Forum in Davos, with Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, and Dr Mohan Yadav, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, present at the signing.
The Powarkheda hub is planned on a site of about 88.3 acres and is being designed as a high-efficiency inland logistics gateway to bring producers, manufacturers and agricultural supply chains from Central India closer to global markets. The hub will be rail-linked directly to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) at Nhava Sheva, India's largest container port, and will offer containerised export-import rail services, as well as domestic container rail connectivity to major consumption centres.
In addition to rail connectivity, the hub will include extensive warehousing facilities and temperature-controlled cold storage, which are expected to support both agricultural and industrial cargo handling. The facility will also house on-site container repair and maintenance services, enhancing operational reliability and turnaround times. A 25-acre plotted land bank will be offered on lease at concessional rates for businesses engaged in value addition, processing, manufacturing and cargo aggregation, which may further reduce logistics costs and improve supply chain efficiencies for users.
Officials at DP World have emphasised that the Powarkheda hub is designed to lower transit times to JNPA by an estimated 30-40% compared with road transport, while enhancing reliability through greater rail utilisation. Enhanced cold-chain infrastructure is also expected to help reduce post-harvest losses in perishables by an estimated 20-25%, supporting farmers and agribusinesses in Central India.
Madhya Pradesh has recorded its highest ever exports in the recent financial year and is an important producer of agricultural commodities, including vegetables and basmati rice, as well as industrial goods. The Powarkheda hub is expected to enhance access to global markets for key districts such as Dhar, Indore and Raisen, which are emerging growth centres for sectors ranging from pharmaceuticals to textiles, aluminium products and agri-commodities.
The project underscores Madhya Pradesh's ambition to position itself as a key node in India's trade and logistics network, leveraging its central geography to connect hinterland production clusters with global export gateways.
