The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has stepped up enforcement against single-use plastic as part of its ongoing citywide plastic prohibition drive, collecting penalties worth INR 75,000 and seizing around 44.5 kg of plastic bags. The action forms part of special inspection campaigns conducted in line with directives issued by the Central and Maharashtra Pollution Control Boards. The latest drive, carried out earlier this week across markets, shops and hawker zones, focused on curbing the use and storage of banned plastic items. Civic officials said the campaign combined awareness initiatives with strict penal action to ensure compliance. The municipal administration reiterated that the sustained enforcement is aimed at eliminating single-use plastic from daily commercial activity, while urging both citizens and traders to shift towards environmentally friendly alternatives such as cloth bags.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has intensified its enforcement measures against single-use plastic, recovering penalties of INR 75,000 and confiscating approximately 44.5 kg of plastic bags as part of a sustained anti-plastic campaign across the city. The action follows guidelines issued by the Central Pollution Control Board and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, under which local bodies have been directed to strictly implement the ban on single-use plastic.
According to civic officials, special inspection drives were carried out on January 22 across all ward offices, with a particular focus on hawkers, markets and retail establishments where the use of plastic carry bags remains prevalent. The campaign was conducted under the directions of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, with Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar and Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Dr Ajay Gadde overseeing the operations.
During the day's inspections, penalties amounting to INR 25,000 were collected from five commercial establishments, while around 7 kg of plastic bags were seized. In the Turbhe ward, officials recovered fines of INR 5,000 and confiscated 2 kg of plastic bags. In Ghansoli, penalties of INR 10,000 were imposed and 3.5 kg of plastic bags were seized. Additionally, the flying squad of Ward Circle 2 collected INR 10,000 in fines from two establishments and seized 1.5 kg of plastic bags.
The latest action adds to the enforcement undertaken earlier this month. Up to January 21, the civic body had penalised 10 hawkers and traders, recovering a total of INR 50,000 and seizing nearly 37.5 kg of plastic bags. This included enforcement drives in Nerul, Vashi and Turbhe wards, as well as action by flying squads operating under Ward Circles 1 and 2.
Civic officials reiterated that plastic waste poses significant risks to both human health and the environment. The municipal corporation has appealed to residents to eliminate single-use plastic from their daily lives and adopt sustainable alternatives, particularly cloth bags. Traders and commercial establishments have also been advised not to store or distribute plastic bags or banned plastic items within their premises, with the civic body warning that inspections and penal action will continue in the coming weeks.
